This was the exact moment the Steelers found out the Eagles ruined their draft plans
Steelers' draft plans derailed as Eagles select their target wide receiver.
The Giants selected Arvell Reese as the No. 5 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, unexpectedly available after the Titans chose another player. General manager Joe Schoen and coach John Harbaugh were eager to secure the top-rated non-quarterback on their board.
The Giants thought there was no chance Arvell Reese would fall to them at No. 5 on Thursday night when the 2026 NFL Draft began.
āWe hoped,ā general manager Joe Schoen said.
But sure enough, there Reese was at No. 5, after the Titans (and that Brian Daboll guy) surprisingly took wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 4.
So Schoen and coach John Harbaugh, who has final say on personnel, jumped at the chance to get the top-rated non-quarterback on their draft board ā Reese.
Now comes the big question: How will Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson use Reese?
Leading up to the draft, Reese insisted he viewed himself as an edge rusher/outside linebacker, even though he mostly played inside linebacker at Ohio State. But the Giants already have plenty of edge rushers ā Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux, who they wonāt trade (yet).
So Harbaugh is going to slot Reese at inside linebacker, next to the newly signed Tremaine Edmunds, while bumping Micah McFadden (who isnāt a proven starter) down the depth chart.
Reese said heās just fine with this. (What else would you expect him to say?)
āIām going to be used in a unique way,ā he said. āIām a weapon.ā
He did note that āthe majorityā of teams heading into the draft told him they viewed him as an outside linebacker. (The Jets, who needed an edge rusher, took David Bailey at No. 2 over Reese.)
Reese said āa coupleā teams (including the Giants) informed him theyād play him at inside linebacker.
The Giants selected Arvell Reese because he was the top-rated non-quarterback on their draft board and unexpectedly fell to their pick.
The Titans selected wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 4 before the Giants picked Arvell Reese.

General manager Joe Schoen expressed surprise and excitement that Arvell Reese was available at No. 5, indicating they had hoped for this outcome.

āIt didnāt really matter to me,ā Reese said. āThereās not one [position] or the other I like to play more. I like playing both.ā
(Again, itās not like he is going to immediately protest how the Giants plan to use him.)
Still, as Reese mentioned, the Giants hope to find creative ways to utilize his skills by moving him all over their defense. Harbaugh made a point of saying that Thursday night, though he did say definitively that Reese would begin his NFL career at inside linebacker, next to Edmunds.
Harbaugh thrived in Baltimore partly because he had great inside linebackers like Ray Lewis and Roquan Smith. Now, in Harbaughās first offseason with the Giants, he has taken two big swings at the position by paying Edmunds and drafting Reese at No. 5.
Inside linebacker matters a lot to Harbaugh. He will need Edmunds and Reese to matter a lot to the 2026 Giantsā defense as this team tries to do a better job of stopping the run ā with Dexter Lawrence gone, no less.
There is, of course, the matter of coverage. Harbaugh passed on cornerback Mansoor Delane at No. 5 and saw him go sixth to the Chiefs, who traded up three spots. Harbaugh also passed twice on safety Caleb Downs, who went 11th to the Cowboys after they traded up one spot.
So the Giants still have significant question marks at outside corner and safety, with Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome, Jevon Holland and Tyler Nubin remaining the starters there (for now).
But Harbaugh expects Reese to be a difference-making run defender and pass rusher. He better be right.
āArvell is a versatile player,ā Harbaugh said. āOur defense is pretty flexible ā position-less, you might call it. We have an opportunity to move those guys around. Heāll be moving around with all of our guys."
Harbaugh said Reese would play some on the edge, even though his position will be weak-side linebacker. Harbaugh really likes Reeseās versatility. Mainly, though, he likes his freakishly athletic upside.
Harbaugh recalled a moment from Reeseās pro day ā a drill that required him to line up on the edge, with NFL evaluators timing how fast he burst into the backfield.
āIt was shocking to see how quickly he goes from point A to point B out of his stance,ā Harbaugh said. āThereās really nothing he canāt do physically.ā
