Spaniard’s clay court season brought to an end

Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of Roland Garros, leaving a clear gap at the top of the tournament’s draw.

Roland Garros is one of the biggest events on the tennis calendar, but this year, they’ll have to get by without one of its brightest stars. Alcaraz won’t be able to take part in the tournament after suffering a wrist injury in Barcelona that hasn’t fully healed.

Alcaraz is at his best on clay, and he always enters these tournaments with confidence. But there was never any sign that he was going to return too early from this setback.

That said, tennis fans are already looking forward. According to Andrea Petkovic, Madrid fans have wasted no time finding a new hometown hero.

Coco Vandweghe opened the discussion on Alcaraz’s withdrawal on Tennis Channel, praising what must have been a very difficult call.

“He’s playing the long game out here,” she said.

She continued: “We know that Carlos Alcaraz and also Jannik Sinner, they’re chasing basically the greatest of all time in Roger Federer, in Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

“You want to see the defending champions be able to contend for their title again. You want to see them be able to go up against the best in the world, the three out of five, the biggest show in our sports is the Grand Slam, so it’s tough to see world number one not be able to defend his title.”

Asked whether she thought it was a wise move, Vandeweghe replied: “I think it’s absolutely the smart thing to do. We’ve seen so many athletes, not only just tennis players, come back too soon, and that’s not what you want when it comes to your sport.”
