Manchester United have bounced back from their defeat by Leeds with two wins on the trot against Chelsea and Brentford, who are both in the hunt for European football next season. They have a chance now to go six points ahead of Liverpool if they beat their rivals, and cement themselves in the top three.

Arne Slot’s side are also on a good run of form, with three wins from their last three league games, keeping the pressure on United. They are faced with a heavy injury load, having now lost their first and second-choice keepers, but need to keep their momentum going if they want to stay ahead of Aston Villa, who are level with them on 58 points.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick: “There are obviously big games and rivalries that we have with other teams, but this one is certainly right up there because of the history, the ups and downs this match-up has produced in the past, the entertainment and the emotion. All of those things make it a really special game.

“We have been getting stronger and we are coming into this game in such a good position. I’m fully aware of how close things are between us, but that isn’t something we are focusing on.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: “We are aware that it is a very big game. Not only because we play Man United, but to qualify for the Champions League and to get the highest possible league position. We wanted to win the league – that is not possible – so we are trying to finish as high as possible. A win [which could secure a top-five finish] is the right step forward. It is an important step, it is definitely not a step backwards.”
