CHATHAM â Some rocky moments have turned into a great stretch. Thatâs not just a way to describe the first month the Chatham Glenwood baseball season, but it was also exactly how the Titansâ 9-2 win over Jacksonville Routt played out on Wednesday at the Bob Erickson Field in Community Park.
Dylan Huff overcame a rough opening inning when the Titansâ pitcher allowed two runs on three hits, including a double by Routt leadoff batter Talon Thompson. The next batter, The State Journal-Register's Small School Boys Basketball Player of the Year Bryson Mossman, then singled and Thompson gave the Rockets a quick 1-0 lead. Two hitters later, cleanup hitter Jacob Brown helped push Mossman across the lead â with the help of a Glenwood error â for a 2-0 advantage.
âDylan wasn't real sharp in the first inning, and they came out swinging the bats well, barreled some balls up, and put some pressure on us,â Glenwood coach Casey Erickson said. "(Huff) got better as the game went on. (Routtâs starter Brady) Turner's got a good arm, but we finally got to him and got him out of the game (in the fifth inning), which we wanted to do as early as possible.â

The Glenwood offense â and Huff â had plenty of answers remaining.
Glenwood junior Quinten Hale led the Titansâ offensive charge, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. In the bottom of the third, with Routt up 2-1, Hale singled to center to score Andrew Schwartz off Routtâs lefthanded ace pitcher Brady Turner.
With the game tied 2-2, Huff was much more at ease on the mound, finishing his six-inning outing with back-to-back strikeouts. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and one walk. He also hit one batter and finished with four strikeouts for Glenwoodâs 10th consecutive win after starting out 2-2 with losses to Joliet Catholic (8-6 on March 21) and 1-0 to Troy Triad on March 27.
Glenwood's Dylan Huff pitches against Routt during the game Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Hale, the team leader with a .410 batting average (16-for-39) said with the way the Titans are playing, theyâre confident in each game.
âWe're on a roll,â said Hale, âThere's obviously teams out there that can give us a game, but right now, teams that we're playing, I think we can give anyone a game."
In the fifth, Michael Lucas led off with a single and the Titans loaded the bases on walks by Schwartz and Colten Knoedler. Hale smacked a line drive to center to score two more and give the Titans a 4-2 lead. Tucker Murphyâs sacrifice fly added another run and after a Cole Woodward walk, Hale stole home on a delayed steal set in motion by Woodward. Then Huff helped his own cause with a double to left to score Woodward.

Glenwoodâs Grady Mueller, who thought he had at least a double in the third inning before Mossman 6-foot-3 frame grabbed it over his head, showed why heâs a dangerous No. 9 hitter by hitting another ball at Mossman for a double. He came around two batters later on a Schwartz single.
âThat felt nice,â Mueller said. âOff the bat I knew it was two (bases). Got the boys hyped (and) we just kept rolling.â
Through his first seven games, Mueller had just one hit before he had his best game to that point with a pair of hits and two RBIs in a 9-2 win over Jacksonville on April 7. Heâs 4-for-10 with four RBIs and two doubles since.
âI just decided that I just need to put my head down, go to the (batting) cage every day, just figure it out so I can get my foot down and do my thing,â Mueller said of the turnaround.
Huff, hitting in the No. 7 hole, was 2-for-2 with the two RBIs, including Glenwoodâs first run in the bottom of the second with a single to score Woodward.
When Erickson went with Dayton Travis for the final inning, Huff was assured he gave it his best after the rocky start.
âI felt a little stiff there in the first,â Huff, who will pitch at the University of Toledo, said. âSome things weren't going my way. Once I got to the second and third (innings), I really started to settle in there.
âMy pitches started feeling a lot better, and I was locating. Getting that first strike was just huge for me.â

It was a tough break for a Routt team which has lofty expectations. With seven seniors in the starting lineup Wednesday, the team knows what is truly at stake, Thompson said. The Rockets won Class 1A sectional titles in 2023 and in â25 and finished third in the 2024 1A state tournament. The Rockets are 95-33 since these seniors stepped foot in high school, and regular-season success is nice, but they have eyes on much more.
âI do want to keep competing,â Thompson said. âI think it's very possible. We have nine seniors, so I think it's very possible to go deep again, and facing competition like this will help us with that.
âIt's the pressure for all of us, I think, to want to make another deep run.â
Glenwood's Keaton Marconi is tagged out by Routt first baseman Anson Butcher as Marconi tries to make it back to second base during the game Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Even with his disappointing outing, Brady Turner is still focused on whatâs at stake.
âJust getting us ready for playoffs is the end goal, I think. Just getting used to this high-level competition, getting to see good arms,â said the senior who fell to 3-1 with a 2.62 ERA and is third with a .375 batting average.
âMost of these (nonconference opponents) throw their (Nos. 1 or 2 pitchers), so it's just good to see higher velocity and better arms because that's what we're going to be seeing all postseason. So it definitely helps.â
Turner will play baseball next at Quincy University.
Routt (9-6) opened the season with a four-game trip in Memphis and went 1-3 with two lopsided losses. The Rocketsâ nonconference schedule so far has included Class 2A teams in Riverton, New Berlin and Piasa Southwestern along with 3A teams Sacred Heart-Griffin (last yearâs Class 2A state champions) and Glenwood. On March 27, Routt also handed reigning Class 1A state champion Pawnee a 12-4 loss.
Upcoming, Routt will face Geneseo, Quincy Notre Dame (twice), Jacksonville, Quincy, Pleasant Plains and Chicago DePaul College Prep.
Routt coach Ryan Turner said it might be the Rocketsâ toughest regular-season schedule yet.
âI think it is to a degree,â said the sixth-year coach. âEverybody just keeps saying yes to the invite to play, and this year it may be stacked up on us a little bit. I feel like this is probably the toughest one.
âWe always try to seek out really good non-conference competition, and our conference (Western Illinois Valley) is very solid, too. The top three or so teams in the conference can beat us any given day. But we really got to find out who we are in the bottom of the fifth against the Chatham Glenwood.â
