While the Canes have earned the highest number of points in the East, (113 to 99), both teams have been among the league’s hottest since the Olympic break. The clubs have been compared as being similar and they both play a similar game. Both are puck possessive and put a lot of pressure on the puck. I would like to compare each line and the defensive pairings, player by player. Bussi was named as Carolina’s most valuable player this season as he basically saved the season when Andersen had big time issues and went down to injury. After some struggling after the break, he has come on strong in recent games. Brind’Amour is playing coy naming a starter but my guess would be Andersen because of his playoff experience. also had a slow start and took a leave of absence for personal reasons in December. He has played very well since his return posting a 14-3-4 record in his last 21 games with a GAA of 2.54 and save percentage of .900. We all know that goaltending is voodoo so it is hard to pick a favorite of this bunch. But Ullmark has a lofty $8.25 million annual salary to live up to, perhaps the pressure is on him. Will the Sens prevail because they chose to spend money on goaltending, or will the Canes philosophy of going cheap in goal pay off? Overall, the Hurricanes have scored 296 goals, good for first in the East and second in the league, (behind only ). They have allowed 240 for a differential of 56, among the tops in the league.
