Iker Lecuona stepped in for Marc Marquez during the 2023 MotoGP season at Honda, with access to some of the most valuable data available. But he found it wasnât as simple as following in Marquezâs footsteps.
Lecuonaâs time in MotoGP wasnât smooth. He debuted with Tech3 in 2019 and was promoted to KTMâs factory team by 2021. After just one season, though, he lost his seat and spent a year away from the grid.
He returned in 2023 when Honda needed a replacement for the injured Marquez. Even though the eight-time world champion was struggling with performance issues on the RC213V, Lecuona was quick to point out just how much ability he still showed.
The Spaniard had a reputation for his distinctive riding style, especially under braking. Jorge Lorenzo famously said that trying to replicate his approach just didnât work because of how naturally comfortable he was on the bike.
Even during his toughest period, Marquez still managed moments that reminded everyone why heâd been so successful. His data, even when things werenât going well, continued to show signs of what made him unique.

Lecuona stepped in for Marquez at Jerez and later filled in for his Honda teammate Joan Mir at Assen during the 2023 season. After reviewing both of their telemetry, he found that Marquezâs data wasnât helpful, as he couldnât replicate the way Marquez handled the bike.
Speaking on the Fast & Curious Podcast, Lecuona explained: âI have to say I didnât watch Marc much. Because itâs true, he takes corners very differently from everyone else. He has something extra, a very peculiar riding style, which works for him because itâs his own, itâs unique.

âAnd itâs difficult to follow or understand how heâs able to do what he does. A corner entry, a âI can do this and Iâm going to do itâ attitude, he doesnât care about anything, how the bike moves⊠He doesnât care what the bike does.
âWhatâs more, I would look at MĂĄrquezâs telemetry once, or twice at most, and I said, âItâs not worth it.â And I started looking at the telemetry of other riders, of Joan Mir, who is more refined, because it didnât make sense, it was incredible.â
Lecuona also offered further insight into what makes Marquezâs style so effective: âMĂĄrquez is brilliant. If youâre a good braker, you can match Marcâs braking power, but you wonât enter corners like him.
âHe has a technique, he knows how to position his weight, which is very important in MotoGP because of the Michelin tyres, how he positioned his body, his height⊠Everything is possible, theyâre all variables.
âBut the way he entered corners, with the confidence he had, and how he turned or lifted the bike, he did it all. Then, the Honda was spinning so much at that moment that it wouldnât exit the corner. But just in corner entry and turning, heâd gain a tenth, two or three, depending on the corner.
âMarc has such a distinct and unique style that if you want to follow him, you have to ride like him. And we each have our own DNA, a different style.
âReaching Marcâs level is very difficult. We see it with the Ducati too; he really pulls the front end and brakes like that⊠There are very few people who can do that.â
