Cruz Davis, a standout point guard from Hofstra, has entered the transfer portal, presenting a potential solution for the Iowa Hawkeyes following Bennett Stirtz's departure. Averaging 20.1 points per game and recognized as the CAA Player of the Year, Davis is expected to attract significant interest from various programs.
With the departure of Bennett Stirtz, the Iowa Hawkeyes have an undeniable hole at the point guard position. In Ben McCollum's offense, a strong point guard to be the maestro of the offense is vitally important. This offense is predicated on timing, spacing, and controlling the tempo. The Hawkeyes need an experienced, talented point guard to do that.
One option to fill that gap could be Cruz Davis, the highly talented point guard from Hofsta, who has just entered the transfer portal, as reported by On3's Joe Tipton. Davis is instantly one of the top guards in the portal and will draw eyes from programs across the country.
The 6-foot-3 point guard from Plano, Texas, averaged a strong 20.1 points per game this year, showing his level of comfort being the focal point of the offense. He shot 44% from the field and an outstanding 40% from three-point range this year, the best of his career. Davis was named to the First-Team All-CAA Team while also winning the CAA Player of the Year Award.
Davis began his career at Iona, where he spent one year, before going to St. John's for a year, and then spending the last two years with Hofstra. He has appeared in 95 games collegiately.
Per 247Sports, Davis is a sought-after transfer portal recruit, rated as a four-star prospect in the portal, ranking as the No. 9 point guard and No. 29 overall player available via the portal.
Cruz Davis would be able to provide a plug-and-play solution for Ben McCollum's offense in a similar way to what Bennett Stirtz provided. He is comfortable carrying the load for the offense and garnering all of the defense's attention, which is something a guard in this system must be comfortable with.
Davis went for 20 or more points 18 times this year, and showed how explosive he can be, registering five outings with 30 or more points. The downside of Davis is his age and eligiblity remaining. It would be a short-term solution for Ben McCollum and Iowa, but a solution nonetheless.
