Iowa players, coaches discuss growth of potential starting quarterbacks

Iowa spring ball is now history, and the Hawkeyes are still looking for a starting quarterback.

Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinksi are neck and neck.

Both of them made good throws, and had some questionable during Saturday’s open practice, but it is clear clear the two players have the support of their teammates and coaches.

“I feel like the accuracy of them both has been really good. I mean I really can’t complain about any of the balls that either of them throws. I mean they are really on you, they are hitting you out of your stride. I mean, they are really trusting you right now so that’s really nice to see,” said DJ Vonnahme, an Iowa sophomore tight end.

“It’s just about moving the team. Ya know, does the team follow the lead, and are they able to execute whatever it is that we ask them to do, and that will change player to player probably as you go through it. Ya know, we’ll see how it looks in August, but it could even be during game competition when you make decisions,” said Kirk Ferentz, Iowa football’s head coach. “You just never know how it’s going to go. So we’ll just play it as it unfolds and take whatever appears and kind of hopefully in what we think is the smartest way.”

“I’ve been really proud of both of them. They’re both playing really well right now, they’ve both improved in the areas that I’ve asked them to improve in,” said Tim Lester, Iowa football’s offensive coordinator. “I always try to make it very clear goals of what I want each one of them to do in the spring and their numbers are really close.”
