PGA Championship: Golfâs best thought Aronimink would be easy. They were wrong
PGA Championship at Aronimink: Golf's best struggle with unexpected challenges.

The Timberwolves face a critical Game 6, trailing 3-2 in the series against the Spurs. Despite the odds, players like Rudy Gobert express confidence in their team's ability to rally and believe in themselves.
Itâs last stand time for the Timberwolves â for the series, for the season and likely for this iteration of the roster.
Minnesota sits in a precarious situation in the Western Conference semifinals, trailing 3-2 against a Spurs team that, by all accounts, has been the superior squad in this series. The odds of the Timberwolves rallying back to win the series are low.
National pundits are already sizing up the potential, long-awaited West Finals between the Spurs and Thunder.
After Minnesota was blasted in Game 5, Wolves guard Anthony Edwards said the guys in the locker room were not worried. Rudy Gobert declined to use that word Thursday. But he acknowledged Minnesota is ârealistic.â The Wolves know where they stand. Itâs certainly not the position they would have picked to be in.
âBut we also believe in our chance. We believe in who we are,â Gobert said. âEven if the whole world is not believing in us like we believe in ourselves, as long as we have that belief, anything is possible. That comes from a basketball game or anything in life, in general. We believe in ourself. We know that the role is hard, but I think this group is able to accomplish very hard things.â
Theyâve proven it before. The Wolves trailed Denver 3-2 in the 2024 Western Conference semifinals before rallying back to take the series. Thatâs been brought up multiple times since Tuesdayâs Game 5. But Gobert noted that only means Minnesota is âcapable of accomplishing incredible things.â Itâs far from predictive evidence.
âNow, itâs a different team, different series, different year,â he said. âSo itâs on us to not just be happy that we did that two years ago, but understand why we did that and understand how we did that.â
Belief is great, but substance is required.
Itâs likely Minnesota believed it could rally from 3-1 deficits in each of the last two Western Conference Finals, but was run off the floor in Game 5 on each occasion to close out the series.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said this is the most resilient team heâs had in his Minnesota tenure. The Wolves have battled through injuries even in these playoffs to reach this point. Past experience has helped Minnesota understand the ups and downs of the season and push through it all to get here.
The Wolves understand Tuesdayâs 29-point loss still only counted as one defeat. Now the challenge is to get back up off the mat. Jaden McDaniels expects that resilience to present itself in âfull forceâ Friday at Target Center.
âEveryoneâs gonna be ready to play,â he said. âYou can tell by (Thursday) just how everyoneâs locked in in practice.â
This is the time to run through a wall. This is Minnesotaâs third consecutive deep playoff run, and second with this general roster construction. But nothing lasts forever, particularly in the NBA. The Timberwolves entered the campaign with championship aspirations. Should they fall Friday to San Antonio, theyâll both have fallen short of that stated goal and look to be a step or two behind the conferenceâs elite â the Spurs and Thunder.
The Timberwolves are currently trailing 3-2 in the series against the Spurs.
Players like Rudy Gobert believe in their chances, stating that as long as they have self-belief, anything is possible.
A loss in Game 6 would likely mean the end of the Timberwolves' season and could lead to significant changes in the roster.
The Timberwolves were heavily defeated in Game 5, which has put them in a challenging position for the series.

Every team has flaws, but another exit in a similar manner would suggest Minnesotaâs are indeed fatal. Such a result would likely force the hand of basketball boss Tim Connelly to make some type of change.
Perhaps it would be a front-court shakeup that saw Gobert or Julius Randle moved elsewhere. Maybe multiple members of Minnesotaâs current core would be traded to bring in a secondary star to serve as Anthony Edwardsâ new running mate.
Whatever it is, it would be different.
This group has one more opportunity to delay such a change, or perhaps even deny it. The Timberwolves have long prided themselves on being the type of group that performs best with their backs planted firmly against the wall.
Now is a chance to prove how they handle being on the brink of expiration. It isnât thought of as a team that rolls over and dies.
âReally just not giving up,â McDaniels said, âknowing like you donât want to be our last game.â
Of this season, and perhaps this era.
âThereâs no one in this group that is a quitter,â Gobert said. âI think we have guys that, when facing adversity, are going to give the best of what they have. Weâll see (Friday).â
