âItâs just really excitingâ â Wiegman speaks ahead of Englandâs reunion with Spain
England head coach Sarina Wiegman admits that she is excited to experience the Wembley buzz once again when her side take on Spain this evening.
The UEFA Womenâs EURO champions take on the FIFA Womenâs World Cup champions in a huge FIFA Womenâs World Cup Brazil 2027 qualification clash at the national stadium.
The game is just one of six in Englandâs qualification campaign but head coach Wiegman is looking forward to a special Wembley occasion.
âOf course, [Iâm really excited], these are very competitive games,â Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. âWe are in the World Cup qualifiers, so thatâs more than this game. You want to qualify for the World Cup but when youâre allowed to play at Wembley again, about 75,000 tickets sold, playing Spain in that atmosphere at home with the fans behind us, itâs just really exciting.â
Spain have promoted Under-23s boss Sonia BermĂșdez into their senior head coach position since their UEFA Womenâs EURO 2025 final loss to England last summer. Wiegman says that while the Lionesses face a different Spain team this evening, the fundamentals remain consistent.
She said âOf course, they have some different players but their DNA stays the same. They really want to have the ball, they play very dynamically and want to go forward, whether thatâs in possession or out of possession. I donât think thatâs going to change because itâs totally in their system and in their DNA. Yes, there may be some little tweaks but in principle, itâll be very similar.â
Tonightâs game sees the two qualification favourites go into battle but Wiegman says that the preparation is no different to when England face their other group opponents Iceland and Ukraine.
She said âThereâs no difference, we approach it exactly the same. We have the game plan meetings to discuss their strengths and weaknesses then we look at how we want to play, exploit spaces that they leave and how we take their super-strengths out. We do that with every game, the only difference is that in February, we had a type-two window and we have a type-two window now, so we have had a couple more days to prepare.â
Englandâs FIFA Womenâs World Cup Brazil 2027 qualifier against Spain at Wembley kicks-off at 7pm.
