NEW YORK â How to ruin a perfectly lovely spring day in New York City: Allow the Rangers offense loose in the city at night.
In the most maddeningly frustrating loss of the still young season, the Rangers teased a sharp, sophisticated approach at the plate with a big first inning only to wasted one chance after another the rest of the night while their own ace couldnât get the ball down.
The result was a 7-4 loss that wasnât that close.
It was the Rangers third straight loss and dropped them three games below .500 (16-19) for the first time this season. It puts them in a precarious position with another five games left in the grueling 40-game stretch to start the schedule. That position: You can do what you need to do and tread water for three-quarters of the time in such a stress and still wind up in a bad spot. All it takes is one lousy week. And Tuesday was a lousy start.
âWe had tons of guys on base and, again, just couldn't get that big hit to add on,â manager Skip Schumaker said. âAnd I think when you let good teams just kind of stick around, they come back and put up crooked numbers. They punished mistakes tonight; we didnât capitalize on theirs.â
The loss was all the more frustrating considering the Rangers spotted ace Jacob deGrom three runs before he ever took the mound and then he couldnât get the ball down. This is the same deGrom, who had allowed four runs total over his last four starts, comprising 26 â innings. A three-run lead with this version deGrom should have made a win a slam dunk.
Well, he picked a rotten time to allow more runs than in any other start heâs made for the Rangers. A pair of doubles on fastballs in the hitting zone led to a run in the first. A curveball that he couldnât bury with two strikes in the second led to a game-tying homer. He seemed to get it under control after that, but Jazz Chisholm hit another fastball at the thighs deep into the right field seats. And after he allowed a pair of hits in the seventh, gave up a two-run double to to account for the fifth and sixth runs charged to deGrom.
There, thatâs two paragraphs about a highly unusual start for deGrom.
Now, about the Rangersâ real problem â an offense that, despite a change in significant personnel, hitting instructors and manager still bears a striking resemblance to the same somnambulant group of 2025.
Yes, the Yankees broke the game open with a big bases-loaded hit. Novel idea. The Rangers had three different bases-loaded situations and managed one run out of them, on a sacrifice fly. Tuesday was not an isolated situation. For the season, the Rangers have a .379 OPS â yes, you read that right: OPS â with the bases loaded. They do not have a bases-loaded walk or extra-base hit. The OPS ranks 29th in the majors, ahead of only .
After the first, the Rangers were 0 for 3 with the bases loaded. Even , who had three more hits couldnât save them. He popped up for the final out of the eighth inning with the bases loaded, but heâs 2 for 7 this season with the bases jammed. The rest of the team just looks like itâs loaded, period. They are a combined 3 for 17 with six strikeouts, including the ones by pinch hitter and Tuesday. Seager swung at three balls above the strike zone in his at-bat ahead of Jung.
. They rank in the bottom tier in baseball there, which Schumaker believes may be a product of trying to do too much in those situations. Just multiply that when the bases are full.
On the whole, the Rangers were 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, which includes the bases-loaded at-bats. They were 1 for 10 after the first inning and the one hit didnât produce a run.
âI think guys are just trying to press a little bit when it's in runners scoring position only because they want it so bad,â Schumaker said. âI just think in general they want it so bad for the team and themselves to break through to give our pitchers a cushion.â
was 0 for 4 with RISP by himself and is in an 0 for 16 stretch in those situations the last two weeks.
Said Burger before the game: âOne of the first things told me when I came up with the is âyou are going to have two really bad months, two really average months and two really good months.â You obviously donât want the bad stretches to be a full month, but I keep peace with it knowing that Iâm just about to get hot.â
Listen, the current rough stretch is now three weeks long for Burger. It would be just fine if the hot streak turned up. The Rangers simply canât afford to waste opportunities like they had Tuesday.
And, yet, they did.
