Bam Adebayo surprised the NBA world when he scored 83 points against the Washington Wizards. Most people know about Bam as the defense-focused center on the Miami Heat. However, he surprised people when he kept hitting shot after shot against the Wizards.
Naturally, a performance like that broke the internet. However, many people were disappointed because Adebayo passed Kobe Bryant for the second-highest-scoring game in NBA history. That group of people includes Jaime Jaquez Jr., one of Adebayo's teammates.
For 20 years, Kobe was the second-highest scorer in a single game with 81 points against the Toronto Raptors. It was a record that most people thought was unreachable until the 2020s rolled around, and some players started scoring 70+ points.
Many theorized that players can beat the 81-point mark, but they expected players like Luka Doncic, Donovan Mitchell, or to do so. However, it was Adebayo, a more defense-focused player who managed to do it.

There was also backlash against Adebayo because he shot a historical 43 free-throw attempts and made 36 of them. It was branded as "unethical" because people felt it was a blatant way to pass Kobe.
Even Jaquez jokingly said that he wanted Bam to score, but he did not want him to pass Kobe. That was because of Jaquez's love for the Black Mamba when he was growing up.
"As much as I love you, I'm so happy for you. I'm a little sick for Kobe. I'm LA, I'm a Kobe guy, but I'm still like, damn, I'm a Kobe guy. I didn't think anyone would break it, but if anyone is going to break it, I'm glad it was you," Jaquez said to Adebayo on First We Feast.
As time passes, more people will come to terms with Adebayo's generational performance. It was a magical night, and no one can take him scoring 83 points away from him because he truly did that in front of the whole world.
