Jaylen Brown expressed his frustrations on a live stream after the Celtics' Game 7 loss to the 76ers, which completed a 3-1 series collapse. He criticized officiating and claimed the refs had an agenda against him, but did not acknowledge the team's shortcomings.
Less than 24 hours after the Boston Celtics lost a Game 7 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, completing a 3-1 meltdown for the East's No. 2 seed, Jaylen Brown was on a live stream airing out his grievances about the series.
The officiating was bad. Refs had an agenda against him. Joel Embiid flops.
I heard everything besides "we weren't good enough."
To be fair to Brown, I've only seen clips of the stream and the brief parts I skimmed through, which can't be taken as a full summary of what he said. It's possible he did take some accountability before ripping into the refs. But that wouldn't have make his bickering any less unbecoming.
When you have three games to win one against an underdog, there isn't a good enough excuse for not getting it done. And as the unquestioned best player on the Celtics, with Jayson Tatum out the majority of the year, Brown carries the most responsibility for that letdown. Heavy is the head.
The thing is, given the unique circumstances of the season, Brown didn't need any excuses. The Celtics exceeded most reasonable expectations with Tatum out, and Brown was a big reason for that in what he called the favorite year of his career. Criticisms of not winning a title would have only been so loud. And though the blown series was undeniably bad, he had another built-in excuse with Tatum out again for Game 7.
BAD TIMING: Tatum was ready for 2nd round if C's advanced

Jaylen Brown faced criticism for not taking enough accountability for the Celtics' playoff failure and for focusing on officiating rather than the team's performance.
Jaylen Brown is considered the best player on the Celtics, especially after Jayson Tatum was out for a significant part of the season.

Yet, even if it wasn't Brown's intention to make excuses, he went out of his way to give every reason why the Celtics weren't given a fair shake, which only magnified their shortcomings more -- and his. Because though Brown played well, his numbers were down from the regular season. They weren't good enough, collectively.
I get it, Brown has a stream he's been doing all year. He felt an obligation to continue giving his unfiltered thoughts. But after a disappointing loss like that, complaining about the refs comes off as an excuse nobody wants to hear.
Nikola Jokic could have a new supporting cast in 2026-27.
Unlike Jaylen Brown, stars on other teams are looking within for why things didn't go their way. That includes Paolo Banchero, who admitted the Magic aren't good enough to reach the next level. And Nikola Jokic, who said the entire Nuggets roster would be fired if they played in Serbia.
And that may very well be what happens in Denver. FTW's resident Nuggets expert Robert Zeglinski wrote a great summary of why Jokic is the only sure thing about the team moving forward. Which makes everyone expendable, including Jamal Murray:
"After a career season that will almost certainly see Murray named to an All-NBA team, Murray would fetch the biggest trade return. However, trading away Murray, Jokić's long-time running mate, would also be the most dramatic, systematic change for the Nuggets. But maybe that's what's necessary with Denver coming up empty in three straight postseasons in the middle of Jokić's stellar prime."
It should be an interesting offseason for the Nugs.
