The Jets are considering signing former Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, who is currently a free agent. Wilson, 37, visited the Jets' training facility to meet with team officials.
Russell Wilson is washed up.
That much became obvious last season, when he struggled with the Giants.
But perhaps unsurprisingly, the Jets might sign the 37-year-old quarterback anyway.
He remains an unsigned free agent. And on Monday, he visited the Jetsâ training facility in Florham Park to meet with coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, according to ESPN.
The Jets are looking for a dependable understudy to Geno Smith, though it remains unclear why they think Wilson can fill that role. Coming out of this past weekendâs draft, fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik seemed to have the inside track to land the Jetsâ No. 2 quarterback job in 2026.
Will Wilson â who still lives in the area â actually sign with the Jets? Well, ESPN reported nothing is imminent, in terms of a contract.
Why is Wilson even an option for the Jets? In March, when they pulled off the trade for Smith with the Raiders, they asked Smith about possible backups. They wanted to know players he liked, according to ESPN. And Smith mentioned Wilson. So the Jets had Wilson stop by on Monday.
During the visit, Wilson also met with the Jetsâ new offensive coordinator, Frank Reich.
The Jets drafted Smith in Round 2 in 2013. He mostly struggled with them, before spending one lackluster season with the Giants in 2017.
It looked like he would wash out of the NFL, but then he went to Seattle in 2019 to be Wilsonâs backup. Smith spent three seasons in that role.
He became Seattleâs starter in 2022, when Wilson was traded to Denver. Smith revived his career during three seasons as Seattleâs starter. Then things went sideways for him last season in Las Vegas.
Now, Wilson could be his backup with the Jets in 2026.
The Jets might sign Russell Wilson as they are exploring quarterback options despite his struggles last season.
Russell Wilson had a difficult season with the Giants, leading to perceptions that he is washed up as a quarterback.
During his visit to the Jets' training facility, Russell Wilson met with head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey.
