During Tennis Channelâs coverage of the Italian Open, former world number one Jim Courier admitted it feels âunlikelyâ that Nadalâs record will ever be broken.
âYouâd like to think so,â Courier said when asked if the record could last forever.
âIt seems unlikely. It wasnât likely that Nadal was going to be healthy enough to even play 14, period. Let alone win 14 with a couple of losses and injuries in between.â
Courier argued that Nadalâs ability to sustain elite form for nearly two decades may have been even more remarkable than the titles themselves. The Spaniard famously finished his French Open finals career with a perfect 14-0 record, defeating players including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem across multiple eras.
Former US Open champion Tracy Austin also praised Nadalâs consistency, pointing out how extraordinary it was simply to compete in that many editions of Roland Garros.

At just 24 years old, Sinner enters this yearâs French Open among the favorites, especially with defending champion Alcaraz sidelined through injury. However, even if the Italian wins in Paris this year, the scale of Nadalâs achievement remains almost impossible to replicate.
To surpass Nadalâs total, Sinner would need to win 15 French Open titles. Realistically, that would likely require domination deep into his late 30s.
Alcaraz still appears to be the strongest long-term candidate. The Spaniard already owns two Roland Garros titles after triumphs in 2024 and 2025, and many believe his game is naturally suited to clay.
Courier also reflected on Nadalâs famous mentality, praising the simplicity of his approach during matches.
âHe didnât waste any energy on things that didnât matter to where he was going,â Courier explained. âPart of the genius is to have really simple thoughts and athletic ability.â
Austin agreed, adding that Nadal mastered the ability to focus âpoint by pointâ better than anyone else in tennis history.
For now, Nadalâs 14 French Open titles still feel less like a record to chase and more like one of the sportâs untouchable landmarks.
