Jim Courier questions whether Rafael Nadal’s French Open record will ever be matched

Even fellow Grand Slam champions struggle to imagine anyone matching Nadal’s dominance at Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal built one of the most extraordinary records in tennis history by winning 14 French Open titles, but even former champions believe that mark may never be touched.

As the tennis world looks toward a new generation led by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the debate continues over whether anyone can realistically challenge Nadal’s dominance on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Jim Courier says Nadal’s longevity was even more surprising than his dominance

During Tennis Channel’s coverage of the Italian Open, former world number one Jim Courier admitted it feels “unlikely” that Nadal’s record will ever be broken.

“You’d like to think so,” Courier said when asked if the record could last forever.

“It seems unlikely. It wasn’t likely that Nadal was going to be healthy enough to even play 14, period. Let alone win 14 with a couple of losses and injuries in between.”

Courier argued that Nadal’s ability to sustain elite form for nearly two decades may have been even more remarkable than the titles themselves. The Spaniard famously finished his French Open finals career with a perfect 14-0 record, defeating players including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem across multiple eras.

Former US Open champion Tracy Austin also praised Nadal’s consistency, pointing out how extraordinary it was simply to compete in that many editions of Roland Garros.
