Joe Cole was working as a pundit on the Chelsea – Man City game on Sunday, and he had the same attitude as many Blues fans watching how the game played out.
With Trevoh Chalobah out, Chelsea were forced to play teenage left back Jorrel Hato at centre back. Meanwhile City had experienced Premier League player and England international Marc Guehi in their back line.
Guehi was of course a Chelsea player once upon a time, as Cole pointed out.
Cole points out Chelsea’s short term thinking with youth players
“I look at where Chelsea are as a club, desperately trying to find a centre-half, spending hundreds of millions of pounds… you had a kid [Guehi] in the building. He came from Chelsea from the age of six, we sold him to Crystal Palace and now he’s at Manchester City and he looks like he’s been there for 20 years.”
It’s a lament we’ve made plenty of times before, and it becomes especially loud when the defender is lashing in goals against you and looking very good indeed. Chelsea’s bad planning goes back a long way.
Liam Rosenior’s attempt to stop Nico O’Reilly on Sunday worked for a while, but ultimately weren’t enough.
