The chants were unmistakable — and loud.
Two postseasons ago, Joel Embiid rankled Knicks fans during a hyper-testy first-round series in which the Philadelphia 76ers star engaged in multiple controversial plays — none bigger than him pulling Mitchell Robinson to the ground.
The Madison Square Garden crowd let Embiid hear it with booming, profane jeers throughout that 2024 slugfest, which the Knicks won in six games.
In true sports villain form, Embiid embraced it.
“I love New York,” Embiid said after Game 5 of that series. “New York is my favorite city in the world. I’ve had a place here for the past five years, so I just love New York. The fans, when you play against a team, they’re always going to pick that guy. … If I’ve got to be the punching bag and hear a lot of ‘F Embiid,’ that’s OK. I love it.”
That heated history returns to the spotlight as Embiid and the seventh-seeded Sixers take on the third-seeded Knicks in the second round of this year’s playoffs.
Then the reigning NBA MVP, Embiid averaged 33.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in that 2024 series, despite being months removed from knee surgery and also dealing with Bell’s palsy.
But the 7-footer is better remembered by Knicks fans for a Game 3 flagrant foul in which Embiid, who had been knocked to the floor, grabbed Robinson’s legs and dragged him down as the latter went up for a lay-up.
After that game, then-Knicks guard Donte DiVincenzo ripped the play as “dirty.” Embiid was also assessed a technical foul in that series for a Game 2 shove of DiVincenzo, as well as a flagrant foul for a Game 5 swipe that struck a driving Jalen Brunson in the head.

Asked about it Sunday, Robinson said he doesn’t consider Embiid a dirty player.
“No, I don’t,” Robinson said on the eve of Monday night’s Game 1 at the Garden. “I really don’t live in the past. It is what it is. I just move on.”
DiVincenzo and others from the 2024 series have moved on to new teams, but key Knicks such as Brunson, Robinson, Josh Hart and OG Anunoby remain, as do Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Kelly Oubre Jr. of the Sixers.
The Knicks have since added Karl-Anthony Towns, who also has a history with Embiid, including a 2019 fight that led to both being ejected.
“I had a lot going on at that time, so hopefully everything is good this time,” Embiid, 32, said on Saturday night, reflecting on the 2024 series against the Knicks.
“It’s gonna be exciting. We got a much younger [team], [added Paul George], a much better team than we had at that time. So it’s gonna be a fun series.”
After missing the first three games of Philadelphia’s first-round series against the Boston Celtics, Embiid returned for Game 4, just 17 days after he underwent an emergency appendectomy.
Embiid then averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game, helping the 76ers overcome a 3-1 series deficit and beat the second-seeded Celtics in seven games.
Moments after the Game 7 win, Embiid delivered the first soundbite of this year’s Knicks-Sixers series, urging Philly fans not to sell their tickets in order to avoid another New York takeover at Xfinity Mobile Arena like what happened two years ago.
The 76ers backed that effort by restricting ticket sales to Games 3, 4 and 6 to residents of the Greater Philadelphia area.
But Hart is skeptical it will work, lauding Knicks fans as “persistent.”
“I expect it to be similar. Knicks fans travel,” Hart said Sunday. “They’re probably the best fans in the NBA in terms of traveling. … That’s our fans. They love New York Knick basketball.”
