Joel Klatt ranked Ohio State football at No. 3 in his post-spring top 25. The Buckeyes maintain their position from last season despite significant roster changes.
If you follow us here at Buckeyes Wire, you know we like to check in with what we think is the best college football analyst out there, Fox College Football's Joel Klatt. He's balanced, insightful, and isn't swayed by public opinion. We follow his opinion rankings during the season, so why not during the offseason?
This past week, Klatt dropped his post-spring college football rankings, and he always seems to be kind to Ohio State -- I mean, why wouldn't he when the Buckeyes are arguably the top program in college football right now -- but still, there are those homers out there that just can't stomach anything scarlet and gray (ahem, Desmond Howard).
There are some known commodities with Ohio State, like quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, but with 51 new faces on the roster, there are also some question marks. Klatt touches on that, but still has the Buckeyes at No. 3, the same place he had them last season at this mark in the offseason.
"Quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith headline the returning players for Ohio State. Sure, there might be more turnover than usual in Columbus, but the Buckeyes have their Heisman finalist quarterback and the best player in college football returning," said Klatt. "There is a new offensive coordinator as Arthur Smith will likely run a more pro-style offense for Sayin. I think the best part about Ohio State, though, is that four of its offensive linemen and running back Bo Jackson returned. So, this offense could be as good as any in college football.
The Buckeyes hit the portal hard defensively to make up for the lost talent on that side of the ball. Sure, they had three players on defense picked in the top 11 of the NFL Draft, but they just showed last year that they can replace that level of talent in an offseason."
As always, Klatt brings up some great points. So, will Ohio State reload like normal? It seems like a pretty good bet based on how the Buckeyes have recruited, what they brought in through the transfer portal, and what history says. However, there is a pretty daunting schedule to navigate, one of the toughest in the country, in fact.
