Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper called it one of the most gripping nights of NHL playoff hockey, and Game 6 backed him up. The Lightning edged the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 in overtime on May 1, to level the series at 3-3 and force a decisive Game 7.
Both teams entered the game with different mindsets. Montreal to close it, and Tampa Bay to extend the series and avoid elimination. They gave their all, and both remained scoreless in full 60 minutes of regulation.
The deadlock finally broke at 9:03 of overtime when Gage Goncalves buried his own rebound. The play came shortly after Tampa Bay killed a penalty to Nikita Kucherov, shifting momentum at a crucial moment.

Speaking after the game, Cooper captured the tension inside the Bell Centre.
âIf you watched tonightâs game, that game didnât need a goal,â Cooper said. âAll it needed was one goal to end it, and thatâs how exciting it was. It was thrilling. It was epic.â
He praised both sides for their skill, physicality, and discipline in a battle that kept fans on edge.
âIt was goaltenders making extraordinary saves, players doing things that were of grace and skill and magic, and there was intensity, and there were hits,â Cooper said.
âIt was everything, and there wasnât a goal scored, yet everybody in the building was on the edge of their seats. I guess thatâs how epic games become epic.â
Goaltending shaped the game from start to finish. Andrei Vasilevskiy delivered a 30-save shutout, his eighth in the playoffs and another in an elimination scenario. He stayed composed throughout, despite the high stakes. At the other end, stopped 32 of 33 shots and kept Montreal alive deep into overtime.
