Journalist: Itâs hard to ignore Liverpoolâs âabysmalâ performances under Arne Slot
Questions are growing around Arne Slot and his future at Liverpool, with the topic discussed in detail on the Anfield Index Media Matters podcast.
Featuring Dave Davis and David Lynch, the conversation explored whether performances this season have justified continued backing, or whether deeper concerns are beginning to emerge.
Lynch framed the debate clearly, focusing on the balance between context and output. âHas the performance level been good enough versus the mitigation,â he asked, identifying what he sees as the central question facing Liverpoolâs decision makers.
He acknowledged the challenges Slot has faced, noting that âthere are issues Liverpool have faced this seasonâ and that âwe all should acceptâ those factors. However, he also stressed that context cannot fully explain the level of performance seen over the campaign.
For Lynch, the key is whether those mitigating circumstances are sufficient to justify results and displays that have often fallen below expectations.
Despite the recent win over Fulham, Lynch was clear that the overall standard has not been high enough. âI didnât think they were incredible against Fulham,â he said, describing the performance as merely âcompetentâ.
That word choice is significant. While competence may be enough in isolation, it does not reflect the level Liverpool aspire to maintain. Lynch suggested that a handful of similar displays throughout the season could have changed the narrative entirely.
âIf you would have had four or five more of those performances this season⊠I donât think the manager would be under any pressure whatsoever,â he explained.
Instead, Liverpool have struggled for consistency. Lynch pointed to a prolonged drop off, describing how the team went âfrom winning the first five games of the season to being then kind of mid-table formâ.
He did not shy away from stronger language either, referencing âabsolutely abysmal performancesâ at various points during the campaign.

The discussion emphasised that the remainder of the season could still shape perceptions of Slotâs future. Lynch made it clear that improvement is essential, not necessarily in results alone, but in overall performance level.
âAll you want to see over the remainder of the season is competent performances,â he said, reiterating the need for a consistent baseline.
He added that even if outcomes fall short, the manner of performances matters, stressing the importance of âsomething that you can kind of get behindâ.
This reflects a broader expectation, Liverpool must show signs of a clear direction under Slot, particularly after a season marked by inconsistency.
Importantly, Lynch positioned his view as balanced rather than reactionary. He rejected the idea that criticism automatically equates to calling for change.
âI donât think Iâm being unfair at all to say that,â he stated, emphasising that analysis should remain grounded in evidence rather than emotion.
At the same time, he acknowledged that patience has limits. âIf you end the season losing the majority of games, losing them in really horrible ways, playing poorly, then the mitigation wonât be sufficientâ.
That conditional framing suggests that Liverpoolâs hierarchy still has a decision to make, one that will depend heavily on how the season concludes.
The main concerns revolve around the team's poor performances this season, which many believe may not justify continued support for Slot.
Liverpool's performance has significantly declined under Arne Slot, leading to criticisms and discussions about the team's direction.
The podcast featured discussions questioning whether Slot's management has been effective and if deeper issues are affecting the team's performance.
Given the scrutiny of his management, there are growing speculations about his future and potential changes if performances do not improve.
