Justin Rose sinks remarkable chip for eagle to save round, make cut at PGA Championship

Rose started his exploits as any showman would, skewing his second shot to leave him on the cusp of the green. It wasn't a fatal error for Rose. But the easy play would've been to chip his effort back on the putting green and set up a birdie chance on his fourth shot.

The British golfer had other plans, however. Using his wedge, Rose clipped his effort out of the rough stuff, sending his effort looping towards the gleaming pasture that lied around the hole. The ball dribbled onto the pitch, picking up steam as it neared the cavern. Then, bliss: Rose's shot rattled home. He couldn't help but pull out a fist pump as the ball disappeared into the abyss.

Justin Rose score through two days at PGA Championship

With his eagle, Rose put himself in position to avoid the drop. The Brit enjoyed a dour day at the office in Round 2, seeing his opening round 70 give way to a Day 2 73.  Rose's eagle left him one-under par through his opening nine holes. He nearly gave his advantage away in the back nine, tallying four bogeys -- two of which were of the double-bogey variety.

Rose, a one-time major winner, finished the round with a three-over-par, one stroke short of the cut line. In other words, if not for that eagle, Rose would find himself headed back home prematurely.

As of 3:00 p.m. ET, the cut line stands at +3. 76 golfers find themselves on the right side of the cut line, including Rose and Rory McIlroy. Bryson DeChambeau, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton and J.J. Spaun headline the list of golfers set to miss out on the final two rounds of action at Aronimink.

Rose has yet to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy. But he's performed fairly admirably in the tournament across his career, making the cut in all but seven of his appearances. Rose has seven top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship, two of which landed inside the top-five.
