Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen launched a sharp rebuttal at Alastair Cook after the former England captain suggested that young batter Jacob Bethell should consider cutting short his IPL 2026 stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and return to county cricket.
Cook had argued that Bethell, despite his immense talent, is losing valuable development time by sitting on the bench. The youngster, who lit up the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 with a sensational 45-ball century in the semi-final, is yet to feature in a game for RCB this season due to stiff competition from overseas stars like Phil Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd and Josh Hazlewood.
Cook believes that situation is far from ideal for a player at this stage of his career. Speaking on Stick to Cricket podcast, he said Bethellās ability at the top of the order is already evident and needs to be backed with consistent game time.
āFor that top order batting, the way he played at Sydney, against that attack, in those conditionsā¦Iāve looked at a player there, and Iām certain this bloke can open. If he can bat three, he can open," Cook said.
He also questioned the value of remaining on the IPL bench during a crucial development phase.
ā(But) itās not ideal, is it? Bethell shouldnāt really be it because heās not opening. Heās sitting at the IPL not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,ā he added.
However, Pietersen strongly disagreed, taking to X to deliver a blunt response.
āAlastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what itās like to be in the IPLā¦What's it's like to always be around the best players in the world.
So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn't matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you're not playing, you're learning and will be a way better player,ā Pietersen wrote on X.
Pietersen stressed that being part of the IPL environment, training alongside and learning from some of the worldās best players, can be invaluable for a young cricketerās growth, even without immediate match opportunities.
Kevin Pietersen further stirred the debate with another post, claiming that county cricket no longer holds the same standard it once did in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
āIf county cricket was as strong as it was in the late ā90s and early 2000s, Iād also want Bethell back playing it now. But itās NOT! It will benefit England more by him being in India, and heās already shown that,ā Pietersen wrote.
