The writing is on the wall with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James as the team looks to build around superstar Luka Doncic.
James has been a legend in Lakers history, deserving of a statue and jersey retirement for what he did to pull the franchise out of a rut and raise the team’s profile.
He won an NBA Championship, one that counts just as much as any other, and ignited the interest in Lakers basketball again at a time when, beyond the hardcore fans, it was dwindling.
After the passing of franchise icon Kobe Bryant, it was James, along with his running mate, Anthony Davis, who helped push the team to finish the job of returning the Lakers to championship status for the first time since 2010.

However, James has now been surpassed by Doncic as the franchise’s building block.
President of basketball operations, Rob Pelinka, has made it clear that the team will be pulling in the direction of Doncic, meaning there will not be an outright win-now mode that tries to make the most of James’ last year or two, but rather keeps the team flexible throughout the next couple of years.
“Of course, any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster,” Pelinka said.
The transition signifies a shift in the team's focus towards building around Doncic as James's career winds down.

“The archetype of the roster that we want is going to be retrofitted around Luka and the things he needs. Clearly, he’s that leader and that player for the future that we want to build the right way around.”
The issue for James and the Lakers is that two questions will determine how things materialize.
First, James will need to make it clear how much money he wants to get paid. The Lakers have a ton of cap space, but they have a lot of free agents as a result.

At this point in his career, he can still produce at an elite level for stretches if he is properly managed, but the low volume of games that he plays in a season makes it hard to give him too much money, like his max deal.
If James were willing to come back for around $20 million, he would definitely have a role for the Lakers.
But second of all, James needs to figure out whether or not he still wants to play and go through another grueling season, either with the Lakers or another contender.
His body has so many miles on it that James is forced to take extreme care of his health, and all that work can be a lot to deal with.
If he is willing to come on a reasonable price tag and commits to playing another season, the Lakers still make sense as the most logical landing spot.
However, given the direction the franchise is going with Doncic and the special circumstances James needs to succeed, it may be best for both parties to move on and start fresh.
