It's been a minute. Well, a lot of minutes actually. Particularly in Tommy Gantt's time.

Gantt (11-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) hasn't fought since September, and to him, eight months is an eternity.

Prior to his Dana White's Contender Series appearance in September, which earned him a UFC contract, Gantt averaged 27 days between each fight throughout his entire MMA career.

"It was always weeks till the next fight, and now it's been eight months or something like that," Gantt recently told MMA Junkie. "So I'm just ready to get the shackles off me, man."

Given his collegiate wrestling credentials as a North Carolina State University NCAA Division I All-American, Gantt's delve into MMA was a natural fit. However, it is not a long-sought-after one.

Gantt's rise to the UFC was an unprecedented and perhaps inimitable stretch. In the span of 14 months, Gantt went 3-0 as an amateur and 10-0 (1 NC) as a pro.

He was 30 when he debuted as an amateur. The race was on to book, and given his reputation, there wasn't a line around the block to sign up and fight him. From West Virginia to Iowa to Connecticut, Gantt wreaked regional havoc.

However, Gantt enlisted the help of someone he calls a "mystery man," who hit up various promoters across the country. Gantt took the show on the road, taking on anyone who accepted, regardless of weight.

"It was crazy," Gantt said. "I was fighting up at like 170 and 185 and stuff like that, at what I was walking around at. I think one fight, I had to weigh in with all of my clothes and some stuff in my pockets to be over welterweight to fight 185. It was all just one of my coaches. He's actually cornering me this weekend. He's the guy who'll have on like a mask or something. I call him the 'mystery man.' But he was just booking my stuff, bro. He was like, 'Hey man, you're getting started late, so you gotta fight, you gotta fight, you gotta get experience. Because when you get to the big leagues, there is no more of this."

Taking what he could get, Gantt fought some debutants and journeymen alike, leading to some criticism from the prospect analysts. But as Gantt explained, he could only take what he could get and wanted to slowly progress his skills, rather than bite off more than he could chew.

"I know people kinda had some concerns about my strength of schedule," Gantt said. "But there's a lot of guys that turned me down, and I just kinda took a crash course. I think it ended up working out because I feel like I'm prepared now. I've seen a good bit of things on the other side of the cage, and I feel like I'm ready now, man. I've been battle-tested a little bit, and it's time to go."

Gantt proved his hypothesis accurate in his DWCS, when he quickly disposed of Adam Livingston, a previously unbeaten fighter who had competed for LFA and CFFC.

"It just felt right," Gantt said. "I don't really believe in the whole pressure thing. I look at things as like a privilege. I don't think wins and losses even occur. It's wins and lessons. I just got in there and did what I was trained to do. I like to tell people the fights are won in training. I knew going into it, because I trained with the guy before. I knew what he was good at and what I needed to work on, and that's what I spent those six weeks doing prior to that, so I knew what was gonna happen when I got in there. It was just a matter of time till I got my hands on him, and the rest is history."

Born in Illinois as one of eight children, Gantt moved to North Carolina after he met recruiter (and future mentor) Lee Pritts and committed to NC State. He's since moved west to train at The Academy Fight Club in Gilroy, Calif., the gym that was recently opened by Daniel Cormier.

Cormier was a collegiate teammate of Gantt's NC State wrestling coach, Pat Popolizio.

"It's spectacular," Gantt said. "To be honest, it's kind of new, too. So we're kind of figuring things out as we go. But being coached by him is second to none. He drops little gems all day, every day, and not to mention how good he takes care of his guys. He put us up in housing out here for the entire time, set us up with training. We've been training with tough fighters and these other camps that around here."

At UFC Fight Night 276 on Saturday, Gantt aims to make a statement during his promotional debut vs. short-notice step-in Artur Miniev (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC).

Gantt, 33, hopes a decisive win boosts him toward the status that would allow him to compete as often as possible. His goal is to finish his initial four-fight UFC deal by the end of the calendar year.

"I want to make a hell of a statement," Gantt said. "The good thing about it now, and I didn't even realize it at Contender Series, but I was going in there with a little bit more of a sense of urgency. I'm excited to actually be able to fight my style now too this Saturday... I think it's gonna be a fan-friendly style, too. I grapple and stuff like that, but I'm the type of guy, that's looking to finish the fight every second of the fight. There's not a time in there where I'm like, 'Let me hang out or chill right here.' I'm like, 'Nope, I want to inflict pain and damage constantly. Just chip away at a guy.'

"... If (then) they booked me just as often, I'd like to get off that first contract this year. Yeah, that would be incredible. I like to kinda try and take things a day at a time and with respect for the sport."
