The Los Angeles Lakers dropped the ball again on Wednesday, failing to secure the fourth and final win of their first-round series against the Houston Rockets.
A poor shooting night, combined with untimely defensive breakdowns, doomed the Lakers on their home floor, resulting in a 99-93 loss. Although Los Angeles’ main focus is closing out the Rockets in Game 6 or Game 7, it’s worth noting that the franchise received great news on its chances of re-signing sharpshooter Luke Kennard during free agency.
“It is increasingly anticipated leaguewide that the Lakers will want to retain the recently acquired Luke Kennard after his strong first-round series against Houston,” The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer reported Thursday.
Not everyone was a fan of the Lakers’ midseason trade for Kennard (the Lakers sent Gabe Vincent and a future second-round pick to the for the 29-year-old veteran). After all, two-way assets such as and III were available on the trade market, and rumors indicated the franchise was interested in both.
The Lakers are expected to prioritize re-signing Luke Kennard following his impressive play in the playoffs.

However, the Lakers settled on Kennard, and so far, he’s proven the organization made the right decision to poach him from the Hawks in early February. The Duke product has provided Los Angeles with an elite floor spacer who must be accounted for at all times and is comfortable attacking poor closeouts, something they were missing earlier in the year.
Kennard averaged 8.4 points on 53.3% field goal shooting and 47.8% three-point shooting in the regular season, and has continued to set the nets on fire in the postseason (he did struggle on Wednesday, though, finishing with zero points).
It’s safe to say the Lakers think highly of Kennard after 37 games and want to keep him around for the long haul if possible.
