Luka Doncic's time with the Lakers has been mostly positive, averaging 33.5 points this season. However, he is warned against a potentially costly trade involving Austin Reaves and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Luka Doncicâs stint with the Los Angeles Lakers has been more positive than negative thus far.
While the Lakers have yet to reach the Western Conference Finals with Doncic (he was unavailable for this yearâs postseason due to a hamstring injury), heâs proven to be the star-studded No. 1 scoring option the Lakers should find easy to build around (he averaged a career-best 33.5 points this season.
Additionally, the Lakers have done their best to cater to the ex-Dallas Mavericks star, and Doncic has expressed his love for the franchise and its fan base on several occasions. That said, Doncic is on the verge of making a pivotal mistake regarding a potential Austin Reaves-Giannis Antetokounmpo offseason trade.
Essentially, Doncic would prefer the Lakers to acquire Antetokounmpo in a deal that wonât require them to sacrifice Reaves. Former star Gilbert Arenas isnât a huge fan of the idea, prompting him to to rethink the move.
A trade involving these players could significantly impact the Lakers' roster and their chances of success in the upcoming season.
Since joining the Lakers, Doncic has averaged a career-best 33.5 points per game, showcasing his ability as a primary scoring option.

âIâm going to say the same thing also in public,â Arenas said. âLike, what am I supposed to say? Nah, I want Giannis (over Reaves) so we can win a championship. No youâre going to always like stay publicly in favor of your teammate you went to battle with.
âBut again, do I want to keep going to war with a pistol? Maybe a little Uzi, or do I want that rocket launcher thatâs sitting over there? Give me the rocket launcher (in Antetokounmpo). It looks like it makes everything a little bit easier sometimes.â
Arenas couldnât be more on point with his assessment. If itâs a situation where Doncic is simply highlighting his teammate in a positive light to avoid backlash, the former lottery pick is doing the right thing.
However, if Doncic doubles down on his stance on a potential Reaves-Antetokounmpo swap and continues to push for a non-Reaves-centered deal this summer (privately), the Lakers will have a serious problem to address.
Of course, Los Angeles wants to keep Doncic happy by any means necessary, but they may have no choice but to put their foot down in this instance. The Lakers arenât championship contenders with Reaves as the organizationâs second option, largely in part to his inability to regularly contain elusive ball handlers and tendency to take low percentage shots at the most inopportune times.
Antetokounmpoâs high-level decision-making, playoff success (he won a title in 2021), cheat-code-like slashing chops, and versatility on the defensive end would make him a clear upgrade over Reaves in Los Angeles.
From now until the beginning of the next NBA campaign, the Lakers must express that same sentiment to Doncic and convince him to change his tune.
