The Los Angeles Lakers came into the 2025-26 season with two of the greatest players in NBA history on the same roster: Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
While four-time NBA champion James is nearing the end of one of the most decorated athletic careers in history, Doncic is just 27 years old and the new face of the Lakers franchise. He has never won an NBA championship but made it clear that is his primary goal when he signed a three-year $165 million maximum contract extension with Los Angeles in the summer.
Pairing James and Doncic for their first full season together created one of the strongest duos currently in the NBA.
But James, who turned 41 on Dec. 30, missed the first 14 games of the season with a sciatic nerve issue. His absence opened the door for a different star duo to emerge: Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Like Doncic, Reaves is 27 and still has a long career ahead of him.
Reaves turned down a contract extension with the Lakers last summer and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. When both Doncic and James were out earlier this season with injuries, Reaves stepped up for the Lakers with some of the best performances of his career, including a against the on Oct. 26.

Reaves and Doncic became the new star pairing for the Lakers, with some people even saying Jamesā presence on the court holds the other two players back.
Regardless of the opinions about James impact on Reaves and Doncic, the trio pushed the Lakers through a dominant 16-2 run throughout March. On April 1, Los Angeles held the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with just six regular season games remaining.
But by April 4, both Doncic and Reaves were ruled out indefinitely with injuries they sustained in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 2. Doncic suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain, while Reaves was diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain.
The Lakers went 3-2 for the final five regular season games and fell to the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference.
Heading into the playoffs, all eyes are back on James.

In four of the last five regular season games, he averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game to win his 70th Player of the Week award on Monday.
Without Doncic and Reaves, James will lead the No. 4 seed Lakers through the first-round against the No. 5 seed Houston Rockets. Los Angeles went 2-1 against Houston during the regular season.
