Moving on from assets who wonât help the Los Angeles Lakers reach their full potential shouldnât be difficult for the franchise.
Thereâs no reason for Los Angeles to play unnecessary games, given that Luka Doncic is in the prime of his career and eager to win his first championship.
Lake Show Lifeâs Svyatoslav Rovenchuk identified a former No. 1 overall pick who was recently deemed unplayable by JJ Redick as a contributor that shouldnât be a Laker next season.
â(Deandre) Aytonâs inconsistency has been a never-ending headache for the Lakers in 2025-26,â Rovenchuk wrote Monday. "There are moments when the starting center looks capable of diving to the rim and operating as a pick-and-roll partner for Doncic.
The article does not specify the name of the former No. 1 overall pick, but it highlights that he is currently deemed unplayable.
JJ Redick considers the player unplayable, suggesting that he does not contribute positively to the team's performance.
Releasing the unproductive player could help the Lakers optimize their roster and improve their chances of winning, especially with Luka Doncic in the prime of his career.

âThere are others in which Ayton is just too indecisive with the ball or just fumbles it altogether on his way to the basket.âThis is all said before mentioning the defensive lapses of the former first overall pick. Ayton is just not good enough on a regular basis at protecting the interior on defense.â
âAny team that features Doncic at the forefront requires as much with consistency. Ayton has a player option coming up for 2026-27. If the Lakers center does opt in, Rob Pelinka should move quickly to unload him elsewhere in a trade.â
The Lakers didnât ask much from Ayton this season. Ayton was never going to be as impactful as former superstar forward Anthony Davis was in Los Angeles. However, Los Angeles expected the 27-year-old to be a viable two-way replacement whose effort would never have to be questioned on the hardwood.
Unfortunately, Ayton failed to live up to the billing, as Rovenchuk noted, causing fans to express their dissatisfaction with his unpredictable play.
It got to a point where Redick was caught telling his assistant that he âcouldnât playâ Ayton following an uninspiring defensive sequence from Ayton in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals (Ayton surrendered two defensive rebounds early in the fourth quarter).
Itâs safe to say the Aytonâs season-long audition with the Lakers didnât go smoothly, which would cause the franchise to adopt a âwe must part ways by any means necessaryâ approach this summer.
