The New York Giants saw one of their star players, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, request a trade last week due to disagreements regarding his contract.
Lawrence is under contract till 2028, but he has no guaranteed money left on his current deal and wants an extension from the Giants. However, talks have been slow over the last two offseasons, which finally led to Lawrence demanding a trade.
Though New York and Lawrence still have a lot of work to do, the latest update on his contract situation shows that steps are being taken in the right direction.
Lawrence contract update from Joe Schoen
During a press conference on Tuesday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen said the franchise has had good conversations with Lawrence and his agent over the last week, but Schoen also said that he won't rush a resolution with the multiple-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle.
"Joe Schoen said himself, John Harbaugh and Dawn Aponte have had 'good conversations' with Dexter Lawrenceās agent in the past week. Schoen said he wants Lawrence to be here but wonāt put a deadline on a resolution," Dan Duggan of The Athletic said on X.
Though Schoen wants Lawrence to remain in New York, the fifth-year general manager also said he would pick up the phone and listen if a team calls about his star defender.
"I'm always going to pick up the phone," Schoen said via Nick Shook of NFL.com. "So if a team calls, maybe not to the effect that coach (John Harbaugh) said last week that everybody is tradeable, but that is my job as a general manager: If teams call you, take into account, it's case-by-case basis and what the compensation may be. That's my job, to take in consideration what that looks like, who the player is, how that affects the roster and try to make the best decision after that."
Bears, Packers, Bills, Vikings and Raiders could be interested in Lawrence
The Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, and Las Vegas Raiders could all be interested in Lawrence and should keep an eye on the situation.
Though Lawrence is coming off a down year with just 0.5 sacks, the Clemson product is still one of the best defensive tackles in football and a complete game-changer.
New York would be foolish to let him go unless they are offered a package they can't resist. However, it sounds like both sides are still far apart on an extension for the 28-year-old, leaving the door open for a trade.
