'Learning from last year’s failures': SRH coach hails Nitish Reddy’s breakout run

Despite not firing on all cylinders, Sunrisers Hyderabad have managed to stay in the top four of the ongoing Indian Premier League, a testament to their resilience and depth. The team hasn’t had the smoothest of campaigns so far. Their experienced pacers have struggled for rhythm, injury concerns have kept several overseas players out, and Travis Head is yet to truly hit his stride. Yet, across six matches, SRH have found different match-winners stepping up at crucial moments, a factor that has helped them secure three important victories.

While the young bowling unit, featuring Ehsan Malinga, Sakib Hussain, Shivang Kumar, and Praful Hinge, has shown promise in patches, one name that has quietly made a significant impact is Nitish Kumar Reddy.

The All-Rounder Making the Difference

Reddy’s contributions may not have grabbed headlines, but they have been vital to SRH’s campaign. His biggest impact has come with the ball, where he has been used across phases, from the Powerplay to the death overs, often filling gaps in the bowling attack.

His standout performance came in SRH’s last outing against Chennai Super Kings. With the side one bowler short, the responsibility of completing the fifth bowler’s quota fell on the all-rounders. Reddy rose to the occasion brilliantly, returning figures of 2 for 31 in his four overs. Bowling both early and at the death, he played a key role in defending a competitive total of 194, helping SRH seal a 10-run win. His wickets of Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre proved crucial in shifting momentum.

Interestingly, all four of Reddy’s wickets this season have come from good length and back-of-length deliveries, a clear indication of his growing tactical awareness. He has conceded just 77 runs in 57 balls on those lengths, maintaining a tidy economy of 8.1, while being less effective when going too full or too short.

Backed by the Team Management

SRH assistant coach James Franklin was full of praise for the young all-rounder, highlighting his growth and maturity.

''It’s great to see Nitish play the way he’s been playing this year. Last season, by his own admission, he didn’t quite perform at the level he expected. But that became a valuable learning phase for him,” Franklin said on Monday, on the eve of SRH's clash against Delhi Capitals, in Hyderabad.

Franklin also pointed out improvements in Reddy’s bowling, from increased pace to better planning and execution.

“The way he’s sequencing his deliveries and adapting to different batters has really stood out. His form is encouraging, but the challenge will be to maintain it through a long tournament, ” he added.

Impactful Cameos with the Bat

While his bowling has been impressive, Reddy has also delivered crucial contributions with the bat, often under pressure.

His knocks, 28 off 13 against Rajasthan Royals, 39 off 24 against Kolkata Knight Riders, and a composed 56 off 33 against Lucknow Super Giants, have all come in situations where SRH needed stability after losing wickets. Balancing the dual responsibility of rebuilding and accelerating, Reddy has scored 136 runs at an impressive strike rate of 160.

"He's been brilliant with the bat," Franklin noted. "We've seen the bounce back early in this year's IPL, and hopefully he can maintain that form throughout. That's the real challenge for him. He's played some real good cameos and been part of some very vital partnerships for us, particularly with Heinrich Klaasen," Franklin concluded.
