Jack Leiter was incredible for the Texas Rangers on Sunday night, but the Detroit Tigers found a way to pick up a 7-1 win at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Leiter went 6 2/3 innings and struck out 10, but gave up five earned runs to the Tigers. He also gave up five hits and walked one, and his season record falls to 1-3. Brant Hurter, the third Tigers pitcher used on Sunday night by manager A.J. Hinch, picked up the win and is now 4-0 this season.
The game was scoreless until the home half of the fifth inning.
With Riley Greene on first base, Torkelson hit his sixth homer this season to left-center field. That gave Detroit a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Texas' Corey Seager, who is still trying to find his way at the plate this season, grounded into a double play with a runner at first base and no outs.
Then, Detroit's Jake Rogers tripled on an 0-2 pitch with nobody out. Kevin McGonigle followed with a single to right, scoring Rogers and upping the Detroit lead to 3-0.
The Rangers got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh inning. But the Tigers answered with a four-run seventh of their own. Hao-Yu Lee singled to bring home Kerry Carpenter for one of Detroit's four runs.
That made it 7-1 Tigers and, well, that was the ballgame.
Brandon Nimmo was back in the Rangers' lineup on Sunday night, but he was the designated hitter. Nimmo went 1-for-4 against the Tigers. Speaking of Seager, his batting average is now at .213 after a 1-for-4 night at the plate.
