Leon Draisaitl emphasized the need for the Edmonton Oilers to improve after their playoff exit, stating that with Connor McDavid on the team, they must strive to win. The Oilers were eliminated in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks, ending their playoff run.
The Edmonton Oilers face a defining offseason after another NHL playoff exit, and Leon Draisaitl did not hide from the reality.
The Oilers have made it to two straight Stanley Cup finals in 2024 and 2025, and they looked good in those runs. But this time, the Oilers fell 4-2 in their first-round series to the Anaheim Ducks, ending with a 5-2 loss in Game 6.
Speaking Saturday morning, he made it clear the team must improve quickly while its championship window remains open.
âIn what world do you have the best player in the world on your team and youâre not looking to win?â Draisaitl said, referring to Connor McDavid. âAnd I know weâre looking to win, but we need to be better. We have to be better. Thereâs no way around it. We have to improve.â

Draisaitlâs message was direct and pointed at a roster that has struggled to match expectations.
McDavid remains the center of that window after signing a two-year, $25 million extension in October 2025. The deal runs through the 2027-28 season, giving Edmonton a short but critical timeline. Draisaitl stressed that reality in his message.
â[McDavid] heâs signed for two more years, and God knows where that goes, but we have two years here right now,â Draisaitl said. âAs of right now, we have two years, and we have to get significantly better.â
Individually, McDavid delivered another elite season with 138 points in 82 games, leading the league in both goals created and playmaking. Yet team success never followed, despite his late-season push helping clinch the playoff spot.

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (97) warms up at Delta Center
After that defeat, McDavidâs message to the media also reflected disappointment. His words echoed the same concerns Draisaitl raised a day later. Both stars pointed to an inconsistency that failed to deliver when it mattered.
âThat was tough,â McDavid said after the Game 6 loss. âWe were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, youâre going to be disappointed. We just never found it.â
The long-standing partnership between McDavid and Draisaitl remains one of the leagueâs most productive. Since 2015, they have combined for massive offensive numbers and heavy ice time. Still, the Oilers fell short this season.
Management now faces a clear challenge. With Draisaitl signed long-term and McDavid locked in for two more years, the Oilers must reshape the roster, primarily in goaltending and defense. The margin for error has shrunk, and patience is no longer an option.
