NEW YORK — An MRI confirmed Sabrina Ionescu avoided significant injury, but she will start the season on the sideline.
Ionescu will miss at least two weeks with a left foot injury, a source confirmed to the New York Daily News.
The star guard will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
The New York Post’s Madeline Kenney was first on the news.
Ionescu injured her foot in the third quarter of Sunday’s preseason finale win against the Connecticut Sun.
She stayed on the ground in pain immediately after landing on the left foot following a layup attempt.
Ionescu later walked to the locker room on her own power.
“It wasn’t good to see,” teammate Jonquel Jones said after Sunday’s game. “I was able to check in with our PT during the game just to make sure she was OK.”
The loss leaves new Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco without her starting guard for at least the first four games of the season: May 8 vs. Connecticut Sun, May 10 at Washington Mystics, May 12 and May 14 at Portland Fire.
Under this current timeline, Ionescu will be re-evaluated around May 18 — which falls within a week the Liberty have zero games scheduled between May 15-20.
The Liberty return to action on May 21 following the team’s hiatus, which would be 17 days from Ionescu’s initial injury diagnosis.
Ionescu’s injury is the first blow to the Liberty season after a 2025 campaign marred by injury. The guard missed six of 44 games last season while the team also sustained lengthy injuries to stars Jones and Breanna Stewart.
