“Manchester United have been linked with him…Chelsea too. Obviously, Liverpool are also admirers of Inacio, who is a left-sided centre-back. There aren’t many top ones available, but he is one of them, for sure.

“They’re going to have to replace Virgil van Dijk sooner rather than later, you would imagine, and Inacio could be an ideal replacement for him, as he can play on the left side of that central defence.

“He’s got good pedigree at international level and has played Champions League football as well.”

That assessment is fair. Inacio may look the cleaner long term Van Dijk profile, but Beukema may be the more accessible, immediate and cost effective move. Liverpool could yet require both types of thinking, one signing for current squad pressure, another for structural succession.

Beukema will not arrive with the global aura of a superstar. That should not diminish the importance of the link. Liverpool’s recruitment must now be less about statements and more about solutions.

The priority has to be defensive reliability. Liverpool have conceded too many soft moments, lost too many duels and looked far too open for a team that still wants to dominate. If Slot has identified Beukema as someone who can help restore structure, then supporters should take that seriously.

There is also a bigger issue around succession. Van Dijk cannot be replaced by sentiment. The club must build the next defensive unit before the great captain leaves, not afterwards. Konate staying would be important, Leoni and Jacquet may develop, but Liverpool still need a centre back who can step in now and compete.

£24m in today’s market is not reckless. It is the kind of deal Liverpool should be exploring, provided the scouting is strong and the role is clear. Fans will rightly demand more than patchwork recruitment, but Beukema could be one smart piece of a much needed defensive reset.
