It’s been a difficult year for Liverpool, and as we near the end of April it’s still difficult to say with any certainty if last season’s Premier League champions have actually found any kind of an identity, a foundation that could be built on over the summer to perhaps give them a real chance of competing for silverware next season.
Having won their last three in league and with a finish that would grant Champions League qualification all but secure, though, all signs point to all of the major players remaining in place—which is to say head coach Arne Slot and sporting directors Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes. However, that doesn’t mean there will be no significant changes.
One of the biggest changes off the pitch from last season after Liverpool won the league title was the departure of assistant manager John Heitinga, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking his place. Now, it appears likely Van Bronckhorst will depart with Feyenoord his most likely landing spot as the Dutch side’s new technical director.
At least that’s what The Mail’s Lewis Steele thinks is likely to happen. With Heitinga well liked by the squad last season and the man largely responsible for running training and Van Bronckhorst taking that over, it might be easy to see that as at least potentially one of the reasons things have gone wrong for Liverpool in the 2025-26 season.
It’s likely far more complex than that, but with Slot, Edwards, and Hughes appearing increasingly likely to keep their jobs despite this season’s stumbles, question around recruitment, and concerns about a side still lacking a clear identity it’s certainly interesting that it appears last summer’s main coaching arrival could soon be gone.
