Livingston had kept alive their slender survival hopes when they ended their 33-game run without a victory by beating St Mirren 2-0 away last weekend - only their second league win of the season and first since August.
But Friday's 2-2 draw at home to Aberdeen - their sixth draw in nine matches - meant they were relying on United taking something at Rugby Park to retain a chance of catching Kilmarnock, who have now moved up to 10th.
Livingston had spent six seasons in the Premiership when they were last relegated two years ago.
But they finished second behind Falkirk in the Scottish Championship last term and were promoted after beating Ross County in the Premiership play-off final.
Livingston attempted to change this season's fortunes when David Martindale's five-year spell as manager was ended in February and he was made sporting director so assistant Bartley could take full control of the team.
However, while Livingston have only lost four of their 11 games under the former Hibernian midfielder, they could only manage one victory.
Livingston was relegated due to their poor performance, finishing 10 points adrift at the bottom of the league after Kilmarnock's win.
Livingston had only two league wins this season, with their last victory occurring in August.
Kilmarnock won 3-0 against Dundee United, which confirmed Livingston's relegation from the Premiership.
