LSU's athletics director explained that Brian Kelly was fired due to a lack of connection with the program, despite a solid record. The decision was influenced by a need for better engagement with alumni and donors, which new coach Lane Kiffin is expected to address.

LSU was subject to the most high-profile coaching change in college football this past season, firing coach Brian Kelly after a disappointing start and ultimately hiring away Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.
Kelly's firing â a decision made by previous Tigers athletics director Scott Woodward â came as a bit of a surprise given his 34-14 record in Baton Rouge. However, speaking to USA TODAY Sports' Blake Toppmeyer, current AD Verge Ausberry explained that Kelly lacked "connection" with the program.
âItâs going back to the Saban model,â Ausberry, who was previously the deputy AD under Woodward, told Toppmeyer. â(That means) running the whole program. Then, you have to go do some things with alumni and do things with boosters and do things with fundraising, with NIL. You have to be a part of that.
âThatâs what Lane will do. Heâll go out there and have that conversation with the donors and the people who support the program and (say), âWe need your help,â and give them his cell number.
âHeâs not one whoâll say, âOK, I donât want people to contact me. I donât want people to touch me. I donât want people to be around me.â Thatâs who we had. Thatâs why we got what we got. There was no feel, there was no connection between the LSU football program, the coach, and the fans.â
Though Ausberry never directly mentions or criticizes Kelly, the comparison he's drawing between Kiffin and Kelly speaks for itself. He went on to elaborate upon the issues with connection, pointing out that Kelly didn't have significant relationships with staff or former players.
âThere was no connection and no building,â Ausberry said. âNot many employees connected. The former players didnât connect. Yeah, Iâm saying it.
âNow, former players live over there (at the facility), go over there, we welcome them over there, (they) work out over there. Thatâs what we want. Thatâs who LSU used to be. Former players came in the weight room, and they worked out. There wasnât signing no form to be able to work out, or, âWho are you? You canât work out at this time.ââ

LSU's AD Verge Ausberry stated that Kelly failed to engage with alumni and donors, which is essential for running the program effectively.

Ausberry is certainly painting quite a picture, and it's clear the program has rallied around its new coach given the resources put in to the Tigers' 2026 roster. Whether his connection to the rest of the program leads to better results than his predecessor, however, remains to be seen.
