Luka Doncic, the Los Angeles Lakers' guard and the NBA's leading scorer, spent December 4 and 5 in Slovenia for the birth of his second daughter. That trip cost him two games on the season.
Finishing the regular season at 64 games left him one short of the 65-game threshold required for award eligibility. His agent, Bill Duffy, filed an extraordinary circumstances challenge under the NBA-NBPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
On Thursday, the NBA and NBPA accepted the challenge, clearing Doncic for all end-of-season honors.
He posted on X shortly after, thanking the league, the union, and the Lakers organization for their support.
"I am grateful to the NBPA for advocating on my behalf and to the NBA for their fair decision. It was so important to me to be present for the birth of my daughter in December and I appreciate Mark, Jeanie, Rob, JJ, and the entire Lakers organization for fully supporting me and allowing me to travel to be there. This season has been so special to me because of what my teammates and I have been able to accomplish, and I am honored to have the opportunity to be considered for the league’s end-of-season awards."
It was a rough stretch before the December trip ever came into the appeal. Doncic served a one-game suspension in late March after collecting his 16th technical foul.
Then a Grade 2 hamstring strain against Oklahoma City in early April ended his regular season entirely. He went to Spain for platelet-rich plasma and stem cell treatment on the injury.
Luka Doncic was initially ineligible because he played only 64 games, one short of the 65-game threshold required for MVP consideration.

Without those December absences, Doncic would have cleared 65 with no challenge needed. The suspension and hamstring made it messier, but the appeal really came down to those two games.
With the ruling in place, he is eligible for MVP consideration and All-NBA teams. He is unlikely to win the award outright, to say the fact, but getting into that conversation was the whole point.
Bill Duffy had laid out the reasoning publicly when the appeal was first reported.
“Luka has gone to great lengths to show up for his team and this league this season. His record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books, despite last night’s unfortunate injury and other extraordinary circumstances. We look forward to working with the NBAPA and the league office to ensure a fair outcome in this matter.”
Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham was cleared under the same provision Thursday. In his own case, he played 63 games after missing 12 with a collapsed lung, both players qualified based on the totality of their circumstances.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the clear MVP favorite, and that race is largely settled. But Doncic averaged 33.5 points per game this season, best in the league per ESPN. Being on that ballot is where he belongs.
