Makai Lemon's performance at the Eagles rookie minicamp has received high praise, with comparisons to DeVonta Smith. His skills and quick adaptability have impressed coaches and fans alike.
The Philadelphia Eagles did not trade up during the 2026 NFL Draft simply to add another body to the wide receiver room. They clearly believed Makai Lemon possessed the type of talent capable of becoming a major part of the offense for years to come. Comparisons to DeVonta Smith are already being made.
Early impressions from the rookie minicamp suggest that belief hasnāt changed. As expected, Lemon has already generated positive reviews following his first practices in an Eagles uniform. Whether itās his movement skills, attention to detail, or ability to absorb information quickly, the early returns sound exactly like what Philadelphia hoped to see after aggressively targeting him in Round 1. That shouldnāt surprise anyone who followed his final collegiate season at USC.
Lemon entered the NFL after a dominant 2025 campaign in which he won the Fred Biletnikoff Award and established himself as one of college football's most dangerous playmakers. His blend of route-running polish, explosiveness after the catch, and vertical ability made him one of the most complete receivers in the draft class.
One of the more encouraging signs for Philadelphia has reportedly been how quickly Lemon has adjusted mentally. It doesn't hurt that DeVonta Smith is more than willing to add some guidance. Head coach Nick Sirianni has also recently praised him publicly, as well as fellow rookie tight end Eli Stowers. Both have impressed during meetings and have shown their ability to respond to coaching early in the process.
That may sound minor in May, but for rookie receivers entering one of the leagueās most demanding offenses, handling the mental side matters tremendously. The Eagles ask a lot from their pass catchers. Route adjustments, timing, spacing, blocking responsibilities, and post-snap recognition all play a major role in whether rookies earn trust quickly. Lemon apparently is off to a strong start there.

Of course, rookie minicamp praise should always be viewed carefully. Success in the short version during spring workouts guarantees nothing once training camp and the regular season arrive. Still, this is exactly the type of beginning both the Eagles and their fan base wanted to see. Philadelphia already fields one of the NFLās most dangerous offenses with Smith, Saquon Barkley, Dallas Goedert, and Jalen Hurts leading the way. If Lemon develops quickly enough to become another reliable weapon within that group, the Eagles' offense could become even more difficult to defend than it already was.
For now, though, the reviews coming out of rookie minicamp sound like confirmation of something Eagles fans were hoping to hear all along: Makai Lemon looks exactly like the type of player Philadelphia believed it drafted. There is also talk that he's a nice bet for potential postseason recognition.
