Pretty much the only way the Toronto Maple Leafs captain won't be in speculation any longer is in one of two ways: a trade actually happens, or he signs a contract extension.
But for now, with Matthews staring at just two years left on his contract, there are still potential deals to be considered.
Maybe he decides he wants to stay put and play with the No. 1 pick, presumably Gavin McKenna.
But maybe he decides it's time for a fresh start to chase a Stanley Cup.
And if that happens, don't count out the Utah Mammoth.

It's fair to wonder if Matthews would even want to go and play in Utah. But if he was up for it, that'd be an NHL-changing move.
