Harry Maguire is banned for Manchester United's upcoming match against Chelsea after the FA upheld a misconduct charge. This suspension follows his red card incident against Bournemouth, leaving the team without its first-choice centre-back pairing.
Manchester United blow as Maguire banned for Chelsea clash
Harry Maguire will miss Manchester Unitedâs trip to Chelsea this weekend after the FA upheld a charge of misconduct.
The England centre-back has received an additional one-game ban and a fine after he swore at fourth official Matt Donohue following his red card at Bournemouth.
The suspension is a major blow to Michael Carrick, who is set to be without his first-choice centre-back pairing for this weekendâs crucial clash against top-five rivals Chelsea.
Lisandro Martinez is also banned after being sent off against Leeds, with The Athletic reporting that there is little optimism his ban will be overturned despite the clubâs appeal.
Martinez was sent off for violent conduct after pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewinâs hair at Old Trafford. Carrick called the decision âone of the worstâ he had seen. However, hair pulling of any force is now deemed violent conduct and a red card.
âThat decision was one of the worst Iâve ever seen,â Carrick said.
âHe [Calvert-Lewin] can throw his arms in Lichaâs [Martinezâs] face â and then heâs sent off. Shocking.
âI donât even know what it looks like. Itâs not a pull, itâs not a tug, itâs not aggressive. He touches it and he gets sent off.
âWorse of all, he gets sent to overturn it, a clear and obvious error. Shocking. He is off balance and grappling.
âWe have got to be careful where the game is going. It is a shocking decision, absolutely shocking.â
United are also without Matthijs de Ligt, due to injury, which could lead to a youthful partnership of 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven at Stamford Bridge.
