Manchester United's interest in signing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has diminished. The club had previously prioritized him for their summer midfield overhaul.
Manchester United interest in Tonali has ‘receded’
Manchester United’s interest in signing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has reportedly ‘receded’.
Tonali had been placed near the top of the club’s summer shortlist as the Red Devils look to overhaul their midfield group in the summer. The Italy international is open to exploring an exit from St James’ Park with Newcastle set to miss out on European football.
United consider Tonali one of the best available players in his position, while the 26-year-old fits the recruitment model of proven Premier League performers.
However, The Telegraph are reporting that initial strong interest has reduced. Alongside a huge asking price in excess of £80m, there are internal reservations at Old Trafford, due to Tonali’s previous suspension for betting breaches.
That risk factor has seen United assess other options, including West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
United are also monitoring Shea Charles, of Southampton. Charles came through the ranks at Manchester City, before shining on the south coast.
United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, was behind the deal that took Charles to Southampton and remains an admirer. He is considered an option to supplement two higher-profile midfield transfers this summer, adding depth to the club’s options.
Manchester United's interest in Sandro Tonali has receded as they reassess their midfield options, especially with Newcastle's struggles in securing European football.
Sandro Tonali's openness to leaving Newcastle suggests he is seeking opportunities for growth and success, especially if the club fails to qualify for European competitions.
Sandro Tonali is seen as a fit for Manchester United's recruitment model due to his status as a proven Premier League performer and his potential to strengthen their midfield.
