Ah, the veteran DFA process for a player without minor league options has come and gone full circle. In the case of MartĂn PĂ©rez and the Braves, this situation felt like it went from âHuh? He got DFAâd?â to âOkay, maybe heâll go through the entire waiver wire and not get claimedâ to âOh. He didnât get claimed but heâs not going to Gwinnett, either. Farewell!â to âAh, he just signed another minor league deal. Heâs back.â
Indeed, Pérez is back with the Braves after having signed a minor league deal with the organization on Wednesday morning. Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report the news.
If this process sounds familiar, itâs because we saw it play out a bunch of times with Jesse Chavez near the end of his career. Iâm not saying that MartĂn PĂ©rez is the new Coach Hat Man around here but itâs at least good to know that heâll be sticking around in the minors for the time being. PĂ©rez was pretty effective as a fifth starter for the Braves as he produced an ERA of 3.14 and a FIP of 4.07 across 14.1 innings of work and three appearances. Those numbers arenât spectacular but for a fifth starter, that is perfectly fine.
For the time being, it seems like heâll be staying active at Gwinnett while serving as organizational depth in case the Braves need him for a start or two â then heâll either pitch his way into staying in the rotation or weâll just have to do this merry-go-round all over again at some point down the road. Weâll see what happens.
MartĂn PĂ©rez was designated for assignment due to the veteran DFA process, which occurs when a player without minor league options is removed from the roster.
Before signing the minor league deal, MartĂn PĂ©rez had a 3.14 ERA and a 4.07 FIP across 14.1 innings in three appearances as a fifth starter.
Signing a minor league deal allows MartĂn PĂ©rez to remain within the Braves organization, where he can continue to develop and potentially return to the major league roster.
