Match Preview: Brentford Under-21s look to secure PDL title as they travel to Peterborough United

Brentford Under-21s will be confirmed Professional Development League winners if they beat Peterborough United Under-21s on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Weston Homes stadium (1pm kick-off GMT).

Sheffield United Under-21s' loss on Monday afternoon against Bristol City Under-21s has opened the opportunity for the Bees to clinch the title with a victory away from home.

The west Londoners come into the game in fine form with eight consecutive wins to their name in all competitions with their last defeat coming in February 2026.

Brentford currently sit first in the table, with a two point advantage over Sheffield United in second place.

Last time out

Sam Saunders’ side secured a dominant 4–0 win over Cardiff City Under-21s at Wheatsheaf Park last time out, extending their Professional Development League winning streak to seven matches.

Ethan Laidlaw and Michel Boni gave Brentford Under-21s the perfect start with first-half goals, while Boni added his second shortly after the break and captain on the day Conor McManus rounded off the scoring. Kyrie Pierre, Joseph Wheeler-Henry and Theo Mawene were also influential, with the Bees in control throughout.

Brentford started on the front foot, pressing high and dominating possession before taking the lead early on. Laidlaw opened the scoring with a composed finish after being played through by Boni, and the hosts doubled their advantage soon after as Boni tapped home from close range following good work down the right.

The Bees maintained their intensity into the second half and quickly put the result beyond doubt. Boni reacted first to a rebound to secure his brace and make it 3–0, before McManus fired home from close range minutes later after Laidlaw’s header struck the bar.

Despite late chances to extend the lead further, Saunders’ side saw the game out comfortably, underlining their strong form as the season approaches its conclusion.

PDL permutations

The young Bees' superior goal difference means a point from their last two games will see them all but clinch the winners status.

However, defeat against the Posh would take the title race to the final day, when the west Londoners host Swansea City Under-21s at Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday 19 April.

The PDL season is made up of 20 category two academies, split into north and south divisions. Each team plays 28 matches across the campaign, facing sides in their own region home and away, and teams from the opposite region once. All results feed into a single league table, with the team finishing top crowned PDL league winners.

Following the league season, the campaign will conclude with a knockout competition. The top eight teams from the Professional Development League will be joined by the sides finishing 17th to 24th in the League Stage of the Premier League 2 competition, creating a 16-team bracket. This will be played as a straight knockout tournament, culminating in a final to determine the overall PDL champions.
