Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool has been turning heads at the Green Bay Packers' 2026 rookie minicamp, as his goals of making an NFL comeback have caught the attention of head coach Matt LaFleur.
Speaking with reporters on Friday, LaFleur provided an update on Claypool, who was brought in for a tryout with Green Bay.
"Well, I mean, you guys saw him, right?" LaFleur said. "He's had great film out there. He's been productive, and he looks like he's in great shape. He's big. So, we'll see how it goes."
Selected by the Steelers with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Claypool had a terrific two-year start to his career, catching 121 passes for 1,733 yards and 11 touchdowns while also recording two rushing touchdowns.
His time with Pittsburgh was short-lived, however, as Claypool was traded to the Chicago Bears during the 2022 season in exchange for a draft pick that would eventually become elite lockdown cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
After a disappointing stint with the Bears, Claypool was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2023 but once again couldn't recapture the magic of his early days.
Signing a one-year deal with the in May 2024, Claypool's future looked bright as he began to emerge as an offseason standout, but he ultimately tore a ligament and tendon in his toe, leading to his release and almost two-year absence from the NFL.
Matt LaFleur mentioned that Claypool looks great, has been productive, and is in excellent shape during his tryout.
