McLaren just revealed a Sonic the Hedgehog promotional poster ahead of the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, and the F1 internet has decided this cannot be where the partnership ends.
The team unveiled artwork by illustrator Matt Taylor showing modern Sonic mid-leap over a current papaya MCL40, with both Sonic and Doctor Eggman sprinting and driving alongside it.
The Eggman character, by the way, is driving a red and white Formula 1, a potential nod to the Senna years of the Woking outfit.
Thereâs a giant gold ring framing the whole thing, â90s-style speed lines, and a small note in the corner confirming Sonic as McLarenâs official gaming partner for the teamâs 1,000th Grand Prix.
Itâs a poster. Thatâs all it is, officially. Fans are not interested in that definition.

The top reply on the r/formula1 thread is a one-liner asking whether a Sonic special livery is coming. Underneath that, the suggestions get a tad more specific.
One commenter wants Tails on the second car so Oscar Piastri gets the orange-fox (Tails) treatment. Another, going by Biskitisinreddit, wrote âMcLaren X Sonic special livery PLEASE I BEG,â which is roughly the energy of the entire comment section condensed into one sentence. A user called Square-Fail-9596 admitted they didnât expect papaya to work with Sonic and called the combination âpeak.â
The poster marks McLaren's partnership with Sonic as they prepare for the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, sparking fan interest in a potential themed livery.
The poster was illustrated by Matt Taylor, showcasing Sonic alongside a McLaren MCL40.
The artwork features Sonic and Doctor Eggman, with Eggman depicted driving a red and white Formula 1 car.
The poster confirms Sonic as McLaren's official gaming partner in celebration of the team's milestone 1,000th Grand Prix.

Thereâs a real precedent fans keep pointing to. Bortron86 spotted a deeply hidden reference in the artwork: the red-and-white car on the left isnât just a generic throwback, itâs a callback to Donington 1993, a race Sega sponsored and which Ayrton Senna won, collecting an actual Sonic the Hedgehog trophy on the podium.
McLaren knows exactly what itâs doing by putting that car in the frame.
Whether the marketing team is teasing something or just enjoying the heritage callback is the entire question fans are arguing about.
Itâs maybe unlikely that the squad will be revealing a Sonic-branded McLaren livery for the Miami Grand Prix sprint weekend, but itâs received so much love that the team may be missing out if they havenât got something up their sleeves.
Others are pushing the campaign in a different direction entirely, demanding McLarenâs 2026 car be added to the upcoming Sonic Racing Crossworlds game, ideally with Lando Norris as a guest character.
Miami has become the race where teams try things. McLaren ran a retro Gulf-inspired livery there in 2023 and a future-themed one in 2024, both of which moved a serious amount of merchandise.
A one-off Sonic livery for the 2026 race, which falls on May 3, would slot neatly into that pattern, and it would line up with Sonicâs 35th anniversary, which is splashed across the bottom of the poster next to the SEGA copyright.
McLaren hasnât announced a livery. The team has only confirmed the gaming partnership and the limited-edition print, which the original poster on Reddit said would be sold in small quantities through Moor Art Gallery for fans not attending the race.
Everything else is speculation driven by a fanbase that has correctly identified the gap between âwe made a posterâ and âwe are definitely not painting a car blue.â
If McLaren does pull the trigger, the design problem mostly solves itself. Papaya already lives next to Sonic blue without clashing, the Donington reference gives them historical cover, and the second car becomes a Tails tribute almost by default.
If they donât, this poster is going to be remembered as a tease that went nowhere, which is arguably worse than never making it at all. Either commit or leave the hedgehog out of it.
So I was giving this article a last look over before publishing, and I couldnât resist but jump on something artificial intelligent-y to have a poke at what this livery could look like⊠Feast your eyes on these fictional designs:
