With the New York Mets at 16-25 on the season, it would not be a surprise if they wound up struggling for the next few weeks and months, and wound up as sellers.
If such a future did come to pass, Freddy Peralta, the ace they acquired over the offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers, is someone the Mets should seriously consider selling.
While parting with Peralta would be a sign of 2026 being a disaster, Fansided.com's Robert Murray linked the Mets to a trade and free agency plan with Peralta that would be a bit unique.
"Peralta, meanwhile, was acquired from the Brewers in the offseason and is a free agent in the winter," Murray writes. "Selling him and possibly looking to sign him in the winter is something that the organization could consider."
If the Mets were to pull this trade and free agency idea Murray pitched off, then it would be a dream scenario for the Mets organization.

While selling Peralta is far from ideal, if they could bring back a decent return in a disastrous season and still get him for the long-haul, what better outcome could the Mets hope for?
If 2026 is a mess, and they wind up selling, then Peralta is someone the team should seriously consider moving. And if they do, they could get back a decent return for a rental of an ace-level pitcher.
And then, if the Mets could pair the decent trade return with a contract in free agency with Peralta in the offseason, they could effectively get Peralta for the long haul while still picking up some trade chips in a deal at the deadline.
Instead of letting Peralta sit on the Mets rotation in a lost year, they could trade him for a decent return, and still get him for the long-haul.
This would be a dream scenario for the Mets if they could somehow pull it off. It's far from a guarantee, but if 2026 continues to devolve into a disaster, the Mets should only hope this scenario becomes reality.
