It was an interesting decision by the New York Mets when they made it.
The Mets signed an infielder for depth last week, but he lasted just three games with the NL East club.
Now, they have designated the former Detroit Tigers utility man for assignment.
Andy Ibanez went hitless with two RBIs in eight trips to the plate with the Mets. New York was hoping he could mash left-handed pitching while Francisco Lindor and Ronny Mauricio are sidelined with injuries.
"It’s an obviously poor start to the season, though Ibáñez has a longer track record in the big leagues, specifically against left-handed pitching," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Tuesday. "He’s a career .250/.301/.383 hitter in 1246 plate appearances as a big leaguer, but has a solid .272/.316/.437 slash (108 wRC+) in 572 career plate appearances versus southpaws."
The Mets designated him for assignment after he played just three games and contributed minimally to the team.
He played only three games with the New York Mets before being designated for assignment.
Before joining the Mets, the infielder played for the Detroit Tigers.

To make matters worse, Ibanez made two throwing errors at third base on Sunday in the Mets' 5-1 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“Those are routine plays,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters, including SNY's John Flanigan, after the game. “You expect those plays to be made, it’s as simple as that.”
Ibanez's spot on the roster now belongs to top prospect A.J. Ewing.
