The New York Mets are in the middle of a major rut early in the MLB season. At 7-12, the Mets are sitting at the very bottom of the NL East, behind even the Washington Nationals.
And speaking of those Nationals, the Mets just swung a trade with their NL East rival. The player the Mets are sending to the Nationals is actually moving up in the standings by 1.5 games, a brutal sign of how things are going for the Mets.
According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are sending Richard Lovelady to the Nationals for cash considerations on their much-needed off-day.
"The Mets traded Richard Lovelady to the Nationals for cash," Sammon reported Thursday morning.
This move isn't a major one, and Lovelady wasn't already a part of the Mets roster after being designated for assignment earlier in the week.
But the Mets will get some cash considerations from the Nationals for Lovelady, getting something in return for the veteran lefty. It's better than nothing.
During his stint with the Mets this season, Lovelady posted a 3.68 ERA across 7.1 innings pitched with six strikeouts and a 1.64 WHIP.

The Mets traded Richard Lovelady to the Nationals for cash considerations as part of their efforts to address their struggles early in the season.
Richard Lovelady has a 3.68 ERA, which is a solid performance among relievers, especially considering the Mets' overall struggles.
The trade allows the Nationals to improve slightly in the standings, while the Mets remain at the bottom of the NL East with a 7-12 record.

It's not a great, nor a terrible performance for the 30-year-old lefty. But the carer 5.25 ERA reliever will now leave the Mets for the Nationals in this trade.
For Lovelady, this deal is actually one where he's moving up in the standings, with the 8-10 Nationals sitting 1.5 games ahead of the Mets.
The Mets need to turn things around, and ASAP. Sitting behind the Nationals in the standings is a bad look. Lovelady is leaving the Mets disaster behind and joining a Nationals team that has a very fun offense but a brutal pitching staff.
