The Miami Dolphins weren't expected to make their second pick in the first round until No. 30 overall, but after completing a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, they took San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson at No. 27.
In the trade, the Dolphins sent Nos. 30 and 90 (third round) to San Francisco for Nos. 27 and 138 (fourth round). Before Johnson takes a step on the practice field for Miami, let's introduce him to Dolphins fans.
Johnson was a three-star recruit out of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale, California. While he originally moved to varsity as a 5-foot-2 sophomore, he had a growth spurt and became a starter at cornerback while still playing wide receiver, punter and punt returner.
After committing to San Diego State, Johnson appeared in 47 games over four seasons with the Aztecs and recorded 152 tackles, 14 passes defensed, six interceptions and five forced fumbles. He also earned All-Mountain West and All-American honors in 2025.
At this year's combine, Johnson measured at 6-foot and 193 pounds. He ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 38-inch vertical jump and 126-inch broad jump, while putting up 17 reps on the bench.
Miami lost several cornerbacks this offseason, including Jack Jones, Rasul Douglas and Kader Kohou. While they signed Alex Austin, and to fill out the depth chart, Johnson will likely be the team's top player at the position as a rookie.
